An IMS Academic Development Award, valued at $500, isawarded to each finalist. Please be atyour poster/group location at the beginning of the postersession!Judges will rank posters, abstracts, and presentations in eachgroup, and will select one student from each group to beconsidered for the Alan Wu Poster Finalist Prize.Poster boards (4 feet high by 6 feet wide) will be provided. If youneed more than one panel, please inform the IMS Office as soonas possible.Supervisors are expected to attend their students’ posterpresentation.THE MEL SILVERMAN MENTORSHIP AWARD –CALL FOR NOMINATIONSIn 1991, Dr. Mel Silverman took on theDirectorship of the IMS after Dr. JohnWherrett. As Director, Dr. Silverman raised theacademic standards of the IMS, expanded thecurriculum, increased student enrolment andfaculty appointments. During his tenure, theIMS added its first professional degreeprogram - the Master of Science in BiomedicalCommunications. He was integral in encouraging clinical chairs toemulate the surgical scientist model and introduce their owndepartmental programs. This led to the creation of clinicianscientist streams within most clinical departments, includingMedicine, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Anesthesia, Ophthalmology,Radiation Oncology, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Togetherwith Bernie Langer he helped found the University of TorontoRoyal College of Physicians and Surgeons Clinician InvestigatorProgram (CIP).The Mel Silverman Mentorship Award is presented to an IMSgraduate faculty member who has served as an outstandingmentor and role model for graduate students, and who hascontributed in a significant way to the IMS graduate program.Candidates for this award must be nominated by at least two IMSstudents. Nominations include a detailed letter in support of thecandidate, as well as a copy of the candidate’s curriculum vitae.Additional letters of support are welcome.Deadline for submission is March 21, 2012. Please send yournomination letters to Kamila Lear at kamila.lear@utoronto.caSIMINOVITCH-SALTER AWARDThe Siminovitch-Salter Award was established in 1995 to honourthe contributions of Dr. Lou Siminovitch and Dr. Robert Salter tothe Institute of Medical Science. It is awarded annually to agraduating IMS doctoral student who has made outstandingscholarly contributions. The endowment represents contributionsby Mount Sinai Hospital, and the University of Toronto Departmentof Surgery and the Institute of Medical Science. The annual awardis valued at $750.WHITESIDE AWARDThe Whiteside Award was established in 2003 to honour thecontributions of Dr. Catharine Whiteside to the Institute of MedicalScience. It is awarded annually to a graduating IMS Master ofScience student who has made outstanding scholarlycontributions. The award is valued at $500. It is awarded based onthe recommendation of the IMS Graduate Coordinators, AssociateDirector, and Director.2
RONCARI BOOK PRIZEThe Roncari Book Prize was established in 1995 to honour thememory of Dr. Daniel Roncari. The prize is valued atapproximately $50. It is presented to an IMS student who hasmade significant contributions to the academic experience ofgraduate students, based on the recommendation of the IMSGraduate Coordinators, Associate Director, and Director.SARA AL-BADER MEMORIAL AWARDThe Sara Al-Bader Memorial Award was established by theInstitute of Medical Science to honour the memory ofSara Al-Bader, a PhD student at the Institute of Medical Sciencewhose thesis was entitled: Science-Based Health Innovation inSub-Saharan Africa.The award will be presented annually at Scientific Day to aninternational doctoral stream student who shows exceptionalacademic promise.The award is valued at $1,000. The scholarship will be awardedbased on the recommendation of the IMS Graduate Coordinators,Associate Director, and Director.IMS STRATEGIC PLANNING RETREAT –January 19, 2012The Institute of Medical Science is currently in the midst of a veryimportant first ever strategic planning process. Through a highengagementprocess, we are exploring high level questions, suchas:What impact does the Institute of Medical Science want to have inthe world?What will we contribute to translational research and the training ofresearchers that is most meaningful?How can we harness all of our unique resources most fully, andwhat will we focus on over the next few years, to make ameaningful difference?Through this work, the IMS will create a five year strategic planthat takes into account our many diverse voices and needs, andthat will provide the IMS with the integrity for our decision makingfor the next five years.Representatives on a core planning team have been conductinginterviews with people connected with the IMS to gather insightand ideas about what the IMS is now at its best, and where theIMS should focus its work over the next few years. Themescollected from these interviews will be used to shape the strategicplan that will be further developed at a full-day Retreat.The Retreat will take place on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at theBram & Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library, 2ndFloor, 789 Yonge Street (1 street north of Bloor) from 8:30 a.m. –4:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served. This important Orientation Session will introduce newstudents to various student services, academic expectations, andstudent opportunities.
