RONCARI BOOK PRIZEThe Roncari Book Prize was established in 1995 to honour thememory <strong>of</strong> Dr. Daniel Roncari. The prize is valued atapproximately $50. It is presented to an IMS student who hasmade significant contributions to the academic experience <strong>of</strong>graduate students, based on the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the IMSGraduate Coordinators, Associate Director, and Director.SARA AL-BADER MEMORIAL AWARDThe Sara Al-Bader Memorial Award was established by the<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong> to honour the memory <strong>of</strong>Sara Al-Bader, a PhD student at the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong>whose thesis was entitled: <strong>Science</strong>-Based Health Innovation inSub-Saharan Africa.The award will be presented annually at Scientific Day to aninternational doctoral stream student who shows exceptionalacademic promise.The award is valued at $1,000. The scholarship will be awardedbased on the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the IMS Graduate Coordinators,Associate Director, and Director.IMS STRATEGIC PLANNING RETREAT –<strong>January</strong> 19, <strong>2012</strong>The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong> is currently in the midst <strong>of</strong> a veryimportant first ever strategic planning process. Through a highengagementprocess, we are exploring high level questions, suchas:What impact does the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Science</strong> want to have inthe world?What will we contribute to translational research and the training <strong>of</strong>researchers that is most meaningful?How can we harness all <strong>of</strong> our unique resources most fully, andwhat will we focus on over the next few years, to make ameaningful difference?Through this work, the IMS will create a five year strategic planthat takes into account our many diverse voices and needs, andthat will provide the IMS with the integrity for our decision makingfor the next five years.Representatives on a core planning team have been conductinginterviews with people connected with the IMS to gather insightand ideas about what the IMS is now at its best, and where theIMS should focus its work over the next few years. Themescollected from these interviews will be used to shape the strategicplan that will be further developed at a full-day Retreat.The Retreat will take place on Thursday, <strong>January</strong> 19, <strong>2012</strong> at theBram & Bluma Appel Salon at the <strong>Toronto</strong> Reference Library, 2ndFloor, 789 Yonge Street (1 street north <strong>of</strong> Bloor) from 8:30 a.m. –4:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be served. This important Orientation Session will introduce newstudents to various student services, academic expectations, andstudent opportunities.
