Take a city thatloves bright lights and insert the brightest ofnew lighting technology in the form of LEDs.Excuse the pun, but I felt blinded by the light. It was hard to find a booth where LEDs –bright LEDs – weren’t the focus. Exhibits coveredLED sources all of the way through to thelatest indoor and outdoor luminaires. The adjacent booths from sister organizationsTraxon and Osram Sylvania were a perfectexample of the gamut of demos. Osramdemonstrations ranged from LEDs andOLEDs to a prototype downlight luminairethat integrated speakers and supported wirelessstreaming of iPod music. The star of theTraxon booth was a transparent door-sizedpanel that had LEDs integrated within layersthat comprised what could have passedfor glass. Two of the sandwiched layers wereobviously conductive, driving LEDs that couldbe seen clearly from either side of the panel.Perhaps the biggest trend at LFI was theincreased emphasis on LED retrofit lamps.Existing vendors of such products such asLemnis introduced new models, and Japanesegiants Sharp and Toshiba entered themarket. Those Japanese companies havebeen major players in the Japanese lightingmarket and are now targeting a global market(see article on page 14 for more informationon retrofit lamps).Supporters of the EMerge Alliance wereeasy to spot around the show floor includingat the aforementioned Osram booth. EMergeis pushing a low-voltage-DC, power-distributionscheme for use in commercial-buildinglighting (see www.ledsmagazine.com/products/22355)._______ The Alliance claims that a sin-__________________gle AC/DC power supply that powers multipleluminaires can boost efficiency 10 - 15% relativeto LED luminaires that directly integratean AC/DC power supply. Lunera Lighting (diffusedpanel fixtures) and Tyco (connectors)both had extensive EMerge demonstrations. The outdoor lighting application stood outat LFI with a range of approaches to street,parking-garage, parking-lot, and area lighting.BetaLED and Cooper, for example, offerluminaires in which you can see the individualLEDs arrayed across the bottom surfaceof the luminaire. Outdoor LED newcomerEverbrite Lighting, conversely, showed aparking-garage light that hides the LEDsin the fixture and uses a unique reflector todeliver the desired light pattern. The buzz around the street-light applicationis certainly attributable to the successcities are having in LED trials and the formationof the Municipal Solid-State StreetLighting Consortium in the US (see www. ___ledsmagazine.com/news/7/5/6). In his LFIkeynote address, DOE Lighting ProgramManager Jim Brodrick said, “We’ve got 70to 80 cities already signed up.” The Consortiumwill grow the segment enabling smallermunicipalities to adopt LED technology.I expected modules to make a biggerimpact at LFI. Certainly Bridgelux andMolex got accolades for the Helieon module, winning an LFI Innovation Award(see www.ledsmagazine.com/news/7/5/8 orpage 9). Toshiba did show a modular prototype, and I still expect a push in the modulararea by many other companies, but clearlythey didn’t make it to LFI this year.We will have a more extensive article onthe LFI sessions and exhibits in our nextissue. Meanwhile I need to rest my eyes, andremember next time not to look at the LEDsin the exhibits – or to don sunglasses beforehitting the show floor.Maury WrightSENIOR TECHNICAL EDITORmaury.wright@gmail.comSENIOR VICE PRESIDENT Christine Shaw& PUBLISHING DIRECTOR cshaw@pennwell.comEDITOR Tim Whitakertwhitaker@pennwell.comTel. +44(0)117 946 7262SENIOR TECHNICAL Maury WrightEDITOR maurywright@gmail.comCONTRIBUTING EDITOR Brian OwenMARKETING MANAGER Luba HrynykPRESENTATION MANAGER Cindy ChamberlinPRODUCTION DIRECTOR Mari RodriguezSENIOR ILLUSTRATOR Christopher HippAUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT Debbie BouleyEDITORIAL OFFICES PennWell Corporation, LEDs MagazineCorporate Offices98 Spit Brook Road, LL-1Nashua, NH 03062-5737Tel: +1 603 891-0123Fax: +1 603 891-0574www.ledsmagazine.comSALES OFFICESSALES MANAGER Mary Donnelly(USA EAST COAST) maryd@pennwell.comTel. +1 603 891 9398SALES MANAGER Allison O'Connor(USA WEST COAST) allison@jagmediasales.comTel. +1 480 991 9109SALES MANAGER Joanna Hook(EUROPE) joannah@pennwell.comTel. +44(0)117 946 7262SALES MANAGER Manami Konishi(JAPAN) manami@ics-inc.co.jpTel: +81 3 3219 3641SALES MANAGER Mark Mak(CHINA & HONG KONG) markm@actintl.com.hkTel: +852 2838 6298SALES MANAGER Monica Liu(TAIWAN) monica@arco.com.twTel: +886 2 2396 5128CORPORATE OFFICERSCHAIRMAN Frank T.
