Making Class Requests... absolute due date is Thurs, June 6Parents are welcome to give us information about their children’s educational or social needs that theyfeel is important for us to consider during the process of placing children into classes for next year.In accordance with the practices of Langley school district, all such requests must be made in writing tothe principal and none must mention specific teachers. Sometimes parents request that we separatechildren who do not learn well together, that we separate twins (or keep them in the same class), that weconsider placing a child from a single parent family with a male teacher: these requests are legitimateand welcome. You know your children better than we do!While it may seem a logical place to start, please do not speak to your child’s current teacher about whowould be a “good teacher” for your child to have next year! This puts teachers in an awkward positionprofessionally (i.e. you are in essence asking them to judge a colleague’s teaching competence, which isagainst the teachers’ Code of Ethics)Please have all class request letters in to Ms Tuck no later than Thurs, June 6 for consideration for2013-14. If you plan to write a letter, please note the following important points:• Late requests will not be considered.• Provide a hard copy to Ms Tuck; emailed requests will not be considered.• Do not assume that a conversation is a request. It must be in writing.• Keep requests brief and to the point; do not include long lists of children you request to stay together.• Kindly do not ask that we “call you to discuss the request”. Your request speaks for itself.• It is recommended that you not tell your child that you are making a request.• Because of the nature of our school population, at many grade levels (e.g. Gr 7 English) there will beonly one class and therefore no way to grant your request. We promise to consider, but not grant, all requests. Parents need to understand and respect thecomplexity and goal of class placement, namely, to organise classes in such a way as to optimiselearning.Parents are encouraged to support their child’s eventual class placement and minimise children’sanxiety around this issue. Most children adapt very well when the adults around them are calm andphilosophical. My husband and I used to tell our children that it was important to learn to learn from allkinds of teachers (thus preparing them to accept a change of teaching style) and that if friendshipswere meant to be, they would survive a classroom separation (thus reducing theirdependence on having a particular friend in their class).fridge-worthy!Adapting to circumstances a child may initially perceive as less than optimal is animportant developmental childhood task and it is very helpful when parents see theclass placement process as part of this development.

Last month we held another very successful Jump Rope for Heart event. We raised $6826.27 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Good job, everyone! Incentive prizes have arrived in the school office andparents will soon sort them and send them home.Planning for 2013-14Belmont enrolment for 2013 -14We anticipate a student population of about 545 next year, the largest in recentmemory, with 22 divisions (8 English and 14 French Immersion) We will again runtwo French immersion (FI) Kindergarten classes and one English K class.Class organisation and split classesIndividual elementary schools do not decide how many divisions to run, or evenwhether to have straight or split classes. Rather, we submit our projected enrolmentnumbers to the Board officeand then are given “grids” showing how many classes, including splits, to run.English “grid”Our current arrangement for 2013-14 shows split classes on the English side at Grade 3/4, 4/5 and5/6 (with no straight classes at those grade levels).French Immersion “grid”On the FI side, we anticipate split classes at 5/6 and 6/7. There will be no straight classes for theGrade 6’s.One or two children leaving or coming in can change the grid, so please note that these classdescriptions can and will likely change by September.Summer school registration is still open. Parents who wish to enrol children insummer school (information enclosed again for your information) are welcome to callthe school office to obtain students’ PEN numbers, which you will need for theregistration process. We are excited that Belmont is a site for both summer school andcamp this July and hope that many families will take advantage of the opportunity toreinforce and/or enrich children’s learning this summer. Classes will run only if thedistrict determines that they have reached a high enough registration level. Please notethat children entering Grade 1 are eligible for Learning Support - Literacy and LearningSupport - French Immersion. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you think your Kchild might benefit from this opportunity.
