P E A V E Y E L E C T R O N I C S1508-8 alcp Pro Rider ®005602701508-8 cucp Pro Rider ®00560250The Pro Rider ® driver seriesrepresents a new level of powerand performance for Black Widow ®loudspeakers. These outstandingdrivers have a power handling ratingof 1,200 Watts program, along withhigh efficiency, reduced distortionand excellent overall sound quality. The series includes two 15” modelsin 8 Ohm impedance, suitablefor both subwoofer and wooferapplications.DESIGNThe Pro Rider series uses a newcone that is a variation on theexisting Kevlar ® impregnated conesused on all Black Widows. The newcone is stronger and tougher, highlywater-resistant and has a speciallydesigned deep roll accordionsurround. The dust cap is alsomade of the same extremely strongmaterial.Voice coil assemblies on the newdrivers use thermoset insulatedaluminum or copper ribbon wire, edge wound and bonded onto anincredibly durable, heat resistantpolyimide composite former. The coilwires are solderless diffusion weldedto high conductivity OFHC copperfoil leads which are embeddedinside the former assembly andattached to the tinsel leads withhigh temperature silver solder. Thesolder joint is then coated with aspecial thermally conductive siliconeadhesive for encapsulation and heatdissipation. The voice coil assembly is bondedto the Kevlar cone and new supertough nylon composite spiderusing a thermoset epoxy originallydeveloped for attaching nosecones on ICBM missiles – truly anaerospace grade adhesive. Thespider and surround are bondedto the frame with a high strengthadhesive.Te magnet structure includes subtlechanges to its geometry that improvepower handling. While it appears thesame as the standard structure, andthe replacement baskets from thePro Rider series will fit on standardBW magnet structures, the improvedpower handling will be compromisedif the standard structure is used. The vent plate assembly used onLow Rider ® drivers to increase powerhandling is included in the Pro Riderseries. This results in a significantimprovement in power handling

capabilities and long-term powercompression. These new drivers also adhere tothe familiar features of Black Widowproducts: Cast aluminum frames, replaceable basket assemblies,Rubatex ® gaskets and highlyreliable, spring loaded terminals areall used.APPLICATIONThe Pro Rider drivers are superiorchoices for a wide range of soundreinforcement, high level playback, subwoofer and monitor applications. The 1508-8 alcp Pro Rider driveris an excellent choice for generalpurpose sound reinforcement. Theenclosure size is reasonable and itsperformance form sub bass to uppermid-range is strong. Its versatilityincluded vented and bandpassenclosure designs. The 1508-8 cucp Pro Rider isspecifically optimized for amazingbass performance in very smallvented enclosures, along with flatmid-bass and mid-range responsefor an accurate, clean sound quality. It is an excellent choice for compactenclosures, multi- driver subwoofersand monitors where enclosure sizeis limited.Pro Riders can work with crossoverpoints as high as 2.0 kHz, but workbest below 1.5 kHz. They deliverexcellent performance in both wooferand subwoofer applications.ENCLOSURESTo assist with the growing interestin home built enclosure designs,Peavey provides completeparameter data on these drivers,as well as several recommendedenclosures for each model. Thisinformation and much more can befound at www.peavey.com.The strength of the completedenclosure has a great effect on thebass performance of the finishedsystem. Box panels that aren’t stiffenough will vibrate, canceling bassproduced by the woofer and creatingundesired sounds of their own. Ifyour box vibrates or you don’t thinkthe box panels are stiff enough, addmore bracing.Vents used in the examples requirestandard Schedule 40 PVC pipe forvent construction. The pipe shouldbe dadoed tightly into the back of thebaffle and glued firmly in place withhigh quality epoxy or high strength, industrial grade hot glue. Rough upthe outside of the pipe to improvethe glue bond.Be sure to account for thedisplacement of the vent, bracing, horn (if used) and woofer or yourenclosure before building it or it willbe smaller than its intended volume. This can reduce bass output andmis-tune the enclosure.Line the inside of the enclosurewith polyester fiber batting such asquilt stuffing. The batting materialshould conform to California beddingfire codes. Attach the batting withspray adhesive or staples andkeep material away from the endof the vent tube where it can bepulled in by air flow. Handles, protective corners, cabinet covering, grille materials and crossoversare available through PeaveyAccessories. When building a bandpassenclosure, design a panel or doorto be removable for access to thewoofer. Use foam weather-strip toseal the panel along with enoughscrews and bracing to prevent leaksand buzzes. Fill the sealed volumeloosely with polyester fiber, but leavethe vented volume empty. Place themagnet of the woofer in the ventedside for improved cooling.Peavey does not supply hardwarerequired for the manufacturing offlying systems, and recommendsthat builders should not suspendor fly any enclosure not certified forsuch applications. These instructions are a generalguideline for design. Properconstruction techniques, goodplanning and common sense willresult in a reliable, high quality, highperformance system.Peavey in on way accepts liability forany damage, accidents or injury thatmay result from construction or useof enclosure using this information.PARAMETERSThiele-Small parameters for LowRider subwoofers follow. This datais for use in designing enclosures.Numerous software packagesare available that use this data tosimulate the response of the driverand enclosure together for optimumperformance in any application.PARAMETER DEFINITIONSZnom: The nominal impedance of the driver inOhms.Revc: DC resistance of the driver in ohms, alsoknown as Re.Sd: The functional radiating surface area of thecone assembly in meters 2.BL: Efficiency of the voice coil and magnetsystem in Tesla meters.Fo: Free air resonance.
