S. <strong>History</strong>build upon the knowledge, skills and dispositions developed during Honors U. S. <strong>History</strong> I. Thefaculty firmly believes that by completing these reading and writing activities, three goals will beaddressed.1. You will broaden your understanding of the individuals and groups who have beencritical participants in the ongoing story of U. S. <strong>History</strong>.2. You will deepen your knowledge base regarding of both broad themes and selectedcritical periods of change in U. S. <strong>History</strong>.3. You will improve your skills in critical reading and analysis of a range of historicalsources, both primary and secondary.Structure of the <strong>Assignment</strong>s:You are required to read two books and complete the written assignments provided onpages 2 & 3. The first book is listed for you; the second book may be chosen by you from alist entitled "List Two." The required book as well as copies of all of the choices from “ListTwo” will be available at Borders Books in Flemington for purchase.If you are unable to purchase the books from Borders Books, the Social StudiesDepartment will provide you with a copy of both the required book and your chosen book fromList Two. ASSIGNMENTSA People’s <strong>History</strong> of the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong>:Please answer this question in an essay that meets the specifications listed below.Utilizing three (3) specific examples from the text, in what ways does APeople’s <strong>History</strong> reflect the struggle to expand citizens’ rightsguaranteed by the ideals on the Constitution during the following timeperiods: the dawn of the nation, the turn of the 20 th century, and the midlate20 th century?• Complete some background research on the historian / author in advance. It will beexpected that you will be citing from these background research sources in supportof your argument in your essay response for A People’s <strong>History</strong> of the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong>.• Support your argument with additional outside sources other than Zinn. Primaryand secondary sources are acceptable and use of databases is encouraged. Sourcesnot permitted are general encyclopedias (Encarta, Britannica, Wikipedia, etc.) and.com websites.Specifications:1. Minimum of 3 maximum of 5 pages (does not include Works Cited page)2. What are the key pieces of evidence employed by the author in support ofhis/her argument? You need to describe 15 separate pieces of evidencefrom the sources employed in the book and identify those pieces of evidenceas either primary or secondary sources.3. In what way(s) does this book’s thesis and argument (a) broaden yourperspective on U. S. <strong>History</strong> (either domestic affairs or international/foreignaffairs) and (b) reinforce or challenge your pre-existing views of the book’ssubject?2
