While in the last six editions, the focus was mainly on the many activities in Rotterdam relating to the oil and chemical industry,in this new edition you will also find extensive information on the rapidly increasing activities in othersectors, particularly on gas and power and on coal and biomass. Besides already being the no.1refinery hub for many years, Rotterdam is now also developing rapidly into the Energy Port of Europe. When it comes to energy, Rotterdam offers all the options: in terms of raw materials, logistics andpower generation, there are unparalleled opportunities in the port. The best evidence of this are thebillions of euro’s which companies are investing in new facilities in the port and industrial area.Examples are the current construction of a first LNG terminal, of two coal and biomass-fired powerplants, of two gas-fired power plants and of four biofuel plants and advanced plans for doubling windenergy in the port.As Port of Rotterdam Authority, we facilitate trade and industry as much as possible. Our policy isgeared towards creating space for sustainable growth, both in the existing port and on Maasvlakte 2,the new port area in the North Sea. Rotterdam’s industrial cluster will be able to expand substantiallyhere in the future. To us, sustainable business is a way of life these days. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is, forexample, one of the partners in the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, a progressive regional programme tohalve CO 2emissions by 2025, in comparison with 1990. The port’s most notable contribution here isthe creation of a large-scale infrastructure, such as the steam pipe in the Botlek and the capture andstorage of CO 2. The empty gas fields under the North Sea provide plenty of opportunities for this. Many examples can be given to emphasise the cluster advantages of Rotterdam. For example, theresidual heat from the E.ON power station is supplied to GATE Terminal to regassify the cold LNG.Here, all sectors are inextricably linked with each other, reinforce each other and as a result, theentire industrial cluster of Rotterdam… to your advantage. For more information about the port of Rotterdam, and how we can help your companyachieve its own goals, please contact us at the following address:Port of Rotterdam AuthorityCommercial DivisionDepartment of Industry and Bulk CargoP.O.Box 66223002 AP RotterdamThe NetherlandsT +31 10 252 12 30F +31 10 252 10 20I www.portofrotterdam.comE info@portofrotterdam.com2 PORT OF ROTTERDAM FACTS & FIGURESPORT OF ROTTERDAM FACTS & FIGURES 3
