Listening into ActionIf you would like your own team or department to engage in your own local Listening into Action staffengagement event, please contact the core team on: listeningintoaction@rwh-tr.nhs.ukExcited that wemay actuallybe involved inchangeQuick wins for April‘Early Adopter’ Local Teams Leading on LiAAs the Listening into Action (LiA) approach implies, thefocus for much of the work is on building momentum withstaff to make the changes you want to see.With this in mind, the Chief Executive’s Trust SponsorGroup has already met to review and discuss thethemes emerging from the first five Trust-wide LiA staffconversations.A series of ‘quick wins’ – identified by participants at theevents – have been agreed for roll-out over the next 3months or so. <strong>The</strong> first of the quick wins approved by theSponsor Group have already been approved and are beingactioned by various teams across the Trust.You told us what you thought, we listened and now we areacting on the right priorities together.<strong>The</strong> first set of quick wins for April are:• Name badges for all RWH staff - to ensure patients,carers and relatives and fellow colleagues can readilyidentify who you are and the important role thatyou perform. This is one of the critical first steps inencouraging a more customer-friendly culture acrossthe Trust and developing the team environment manymentioned at the initial staff conversations• Patient-friendly New Cross site map – a new patientfriendlysite map has been developed with the namesof departments simplified and made easier to read.<strong>The</strong> new map has already been tested by patientsand volunteers to ensure it is easy to follow. It will beavailable in a leaflet format, for people to pick up atany of the hospital entrances, over the next couple ofmonths.More involved/hopeful;fabulous day, it will begreat to see this rolleddown and real changeoccur• At the Staff Conversations, many people alsomentioned the idea of colour coding the car parks androutes to departments to make it easier for people topark in the most convenient place on the site, and tofind where they need to go. This idea will be takenforward by the Arts and Wayfinding Group and will bedeveloped in line with the new hospital developmentproject as a longer term solution, and as part of anongoing update process.• 15 day turnaround of ‘D work’ requests for estates -<strong>The</strong> Estates team are working on a 10 day turnaroundfor quoting for the request, with a 5 day review/approval process and feedback to the requestor. Thisshould help ensure that estate-related improvementsrequested by staff are either actioned quickly or thevalid reasons for non-approval made clear to therequestor.• Publicise all Out Of Hours arrangements/services/contact numbers - This should ensure that any staffworking through the night or at weekends haveappropriate knowledge of how and when to access arange of vital services they and their patients need.• <strong>The</strong> Hospital at night – A security review is beingcarried out of the arrangements for the hospital atnight, to ensure that the hospital site is a safe andsecure place to be for patients, visitors and staff at alltimes.That everyone wantsthe same improvement:quality for patients andstaffIn addition to the quick wins for April, a number of ‘early adopter’ teams have confirmed that they are keen to use theListening into Action staff engagement approach locally. <strong>The</strong>se teams will be holding their own LiA session with their ownstaff and colleagues from other directorates and specialties who work closely with them. <strong>The</strong> local sessions are currentlybeing planned with a lead sponsor group for each service, including a lead clinician and a member of the departmentmanagement team. <strong>The</strong> local sessions will happen over the next couple of months, picking up relevant themes from thefirst Trust-wide staff LiA events, and focusing on how the local teams are going to identify, prioritise and implement thechanges to patient care they want to make.Local teams are being empoweredto make the changes they wantto see to their own areas. Morenews on what the early adopterare focusing on will be availablethrough the LiA campaign overthe coming weeks, but if youwant to understand more aboutwhat they are doing, speak toyour colleagues who work in thefollowing early adopter teams:• Gastroentorology Services• Orthopaedic Services• Cardiothoracic Services• Children’s Services.• 24/7 Service requirements atRWH• Developing an Optimal BedState model for the Trust• Pharmacy Services• Multi-agency dischargeplanning• Maternity Services• Radiology1516
