MiguelPresident Barack Obama visited thealley of the Sun and members of thek-<strong>Chin</strong> Tribal Council; which included;hairman Louis Manuel, Jr. Councilmanerry Enos, and Councilwoman Deliaarlyle; were in attendance as Presidentbama spoke to a crowd of over ahousand attendees at Desert Vista Highchool in Ahwatukee. The Presidentpoke about his economic recovery plan,he country’s recovering housing market,nd the potential of closing Fannie Mae,reddie Mac, and other governmentponsored mortgage lenders.Other dignitaries in attendancencluded state officials and Tribal leadersrom Salt River, Gila River, Pasquaaqui, Tohono O’odham, Navajo Nation,nd San Carlos.“Hello Phoenix. Hello Arizona” saidhe President to a roaring ovation. “Were so glad to be here.” Before addressinghe crowd any further, President Obamaade it a priority to recognize Unitedtates Secretary of Urban Housing andevelopment, Shawn Donovan whohe President acknowledged, “has beenghting for homeowners and workingamilies every single day.”The President also recognized otherongressmen, Mayors, Tribal Leaders,nd State Legislators who were inttendance.Prior to his Arizona stop, theresident visited other states promotinghat he feels needs to be done to securebetter bargain for the middle class. Heaid that a national strategy to make surehat everybody who works hard has achance to succeed in the 21st century isneeded. He also stated that the countryhas fought back from a four and a halfrecession, which included a brokenhealth care system and housing marketthat was in a decline.Part of his recovery plan includedchanging the tax code which had becometilted in favor of the wealthy Americansat the expense of working middle class.“We saved the oil industry. We’ve gotGM who plans to hire 1,000 employeesright next door in Chandler,” Obamapointed out. “We’ve created 7 millionjobs over the past 41 months…we’reselling more products made in Americanto the rest of the world than ever beforeand our exports are way up.”The President also acknowledgedthat America, during his tenure, “weproduce more renewable energy thanever, and more natural gas than anyone.Health Care costs are growing at theslowest rate in 50 years. And our deficitsare falling at the fastest rate in 60 years.”According to the President, phonyscandals, distractions, and politicalplastering, for the past year and half,has shifted away from plans to shore upmiddle class families and create laddersof opportunities for them.“We have to build a cornerstone forwhat it means to be middle class,” hesaid. “A good job with good wages, ahome to call your own, a good education,an affordable health care that’s therefor you when you get sick, a secureretirement even if you’re not rich, and theopportunity for people to work their wayinto middle class status.”During his speech, the Presidentdefined stages for preventing anotherforeclosure crisis. Representative Steve Smith, Mayor ChristianPrice, Supervisor Tony Smith, County Attorney Lando Voyles and SheriffPaul Babeu will be in attendance and speaking at the event.Ashlea Anderson, Yolanda Miranda, Cesselea Thepkaisone and AnnaliseManuel get their dance moves on at the Back to School Bash.The event will provide essential information on crime prevention, child safety,and environmental awareness. The Maricopa Police Department will be onhand to provide FREE fingerprinting of all the children along with bringingPolice cars, Police motorcycles and the Sheriff’s K-9 Dog Unit. Letter grades for each schooland district are based on Arizona’sInstrument to Measure Standards(AIMS) test. The AIMS test measuresstudent proficiency of the ArizonaAcademic Content Standards inWriting, Reading, Mathematics, andScience and is required by state andfederal law. Students in grades 3-10are tested each year on the AIMS test.Passage of the tenth grade AIMS testis required for graduation.The Maricopa Unified SchoolDistrict earned a district grade of “B”for 2012-13. Pima Butte Elementarycontinued its streak as an “A” schoolWhen would be the best time tocontact you? For new <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> Scholarship recipients, the studentorientation is mandatory as stated in the<strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> Higher Education ScholarshipPolicies. Continuing students, recentGED graduates, and students currentlyin the <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> GED program were alsoinvited to attend orientation.Pam Velasquez (Enrollment/Academic Advisor) welcomed studentsto the orientation and introducedthe day’s agenda. Vivian Saunders,Education Director, welcomed andcongratulated all students awarded forthe 2013-14 Academic Year. She spokeof their advantage of having strongfinancial support for their educationalgoals from the <strong>Community</strong>, as veryfew Native American tribes are able toprovide so.Special guest AlexandreaSchulte (Northern Ute Tribe, NativeAmerican Professional Golfer)addressed the Higher Education studentsshortly after Education Director, VivianSaunders. Ms. Schulte gavecredit to her mother and grandfatherwhom she used as a “driving goal” toobtain her Bachelor of Arts, majoring inCommunications from the University ofArkansas. She left the <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> HigherEducation students with this message:“Search deep inside yourself to findyour personal goals. The most recent graduate,Yvette Oliver, passed the exam onAugust 6th and is currently exploringher options for moving forward withhigher education.Yvette told <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> GEDInstructor, Desiree Guarino, “I’m happy.I finally got it done.” She later stated,“I think I want to go to CAC.” Yvetteexplained that the close proximity ofthe new Maricopa CAC campus was atop priority as she explored availableYvetteOliverattendedtheHigherEd.OrientationafterearningherGED.options.As an increasing number of <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong>GED students demonstrate success, itseems that family members are takingnotice. A definite trend has becomeapparent within the GED Program inrecent months. More and more familiesare sharing a common drivein pursuing their educationalgoals. While some <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong>members come into the GEDoffice and sign-up in pairs,with either a family member,Gwendolyn Lopez-Piloneproudly displays her GED,as well as that of sonAlexander Lopez.Photos by Desiree GuarinoBrand New <strong>Community</strong> Choir NowForming in MaricopaMaricopa Chorus, abrand new avenue for localsingers to exercise theirtalents, is now forming,heading for the Chorus’sinaugural performance at aDecember Holiday Concertwhich will include the wellknownHallelujah Chorusfrom Handel’s Messiah.Maricopa Chorus will beaccompanied in concertby our local chamberorchestra, Maricopa Music Circle.The City of Maricopa already offersmany ways to express one’s artisticabilities in the visual, theatrical, dance,and orchestral performing arts. But therehas not been a community choir...untilnow.The formation of Maricopa Choruswill bring people together in unique andharmonious ways, because somethingspecial happens when individual voicescombine in song. A community choir is anexcellent example of the truism that “thewhole is greater than the sum of its parts.”John Janzen is the Founder andArtistic Director of the MaricopaJohn Janzensignificant other, or close friend in tow,others join the program after hearing thenews that a family member or friend hasalready taken that plunge.Why does it help to know you’renot in it alone? Recent GED graduate,Ashley Batopis, answer to that questionis simple. “It’s easier to do it with afamily member because they push you.”It certainly worked for the Batopisfamily. Ashley and sister, StephanieBatopis, entered the program together,tested together, and graduated togetheron July 29, 2013. Their successfollowed a mere seven months aftertheir sister, Amy Batopis, achieved herGED in December of 2012, under theinstruction of the program’s previousGED Instructor and CAC staff.The Batopis family was not theonly family to share a graduation datethis July. Gwendolyn Lopez-Pilone andson, Alexander Lopez, also attended the<strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> GED program simultaneously,testing at Central Arizona Collegealongside the Batopis sisters on July29. When <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> GED Instructor,Desiree Guarino asked Gwen whethershe should schedule Alex for the examon the same day as Gwen’s chosen testdate, Gwen responded, “Yes. I don’twant him to end up like me, waiting allthese years.” Gwen’s desire to see herstory continues to page 7Chorus. A Maricoparesident since 2008 and aseasoned choral leader, heholds a Bachelors Degree inChoral Conducting. Beforemoving to Maricopa, Johnconducted church choirsin Minnesota for over adecade and in spring 2013he was Musical Director forthe Maricopa <strong>Community</strong>Theatre’s production of ALittle Shop of Horrors.He is looking for adult voices(SATB) that can read music. Miguel & Photos by Deidra CarlyleThe <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> A’s little league squadtook to the diamond in the town of GilaBend in attempts to make another run atcapturing a tournament title prior to theend of the season.The A’s did get to the finals but theirattempts fell short by 4 points as theirrivals, the Chui Chu Cowboys, pinned a4-0 loss on <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> in the finals of theSan Lucy Wildcats Dusty Face LittleLeague Baseball Tournament.The one day tournament had theA’s matched against the hometownteam, San Lucy Wildcats. <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> usedstrong defense and timely hitting to pushacross a few runs early before coastingto a 6-1 victory.In the second match, the Cowboysfrom Chui Chu who defeated <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong>in the title game in <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> a fewweeks before, plated 2 runs early andwithstood any <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> rally for a 2-0victory.The loss gave <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> a 1-1 recordas they headed into a third roundmeeting with the Bad News Judams ofthe Tohono O’odham Nation.The Judams and <strong>Ak</strong>-<strong>Chin</strong> slugged itout throughout the game, as each teamplated run after run.
