Faller Honored After Title WinSweet Home coach John Faller was named the Coachof the Week after his Panthers won the Class A championshipwith a 28-7 win over West Seneca East in theSection 6 championship game.It was the 6th consecutive year that Sweet Home haswon the Class A championship and it was the Panthers60th straight win over WNY opponents. Many area fans were anticipating a closer gamebetween the two undefeated teams but Sweet Homedominated the ground game and the field position fromthe start.Kahlil Humphrey rushed for 126 yards and 2 TDs,including a 34-yardscoring burst thatgave Sweet Homea 6-0 lead.“We were ableto run the ball,”Faller said. “Wehad a nice mix ofrun and pass onoffense.”In the secondquarter, withSweet Home holdingan 8-0 lead,West Seneca Eastpunter AndySmigiera droppeda punt that wasdowned on thePanthers 1-yardline.Sweet Homewent into the “BigBird” formation andbegan to run thedouble-wingoffense.“We always use the double-wing when we need asolid running game,” Faller said. “It’s a good offense butit’s a safe offense. It makes the other team do thingsdefensively that maybe they aren’t used to.”Sweet Home executed a punishing drive, as they traveled99 yards for a TD.“It got us out of our own end zone,” Faller said.“Running that offense well really builds our confidencewhen we can move the ball. We went to spread for acouple of plays after we got out of our own goal line. Wepick and choose our times as to win to use it.”Sweet Home actually switched to their Spread offensefor two plays in the middle of the drive before switchingback into the Big Bird. The Panthers capped the drive when Mike Torrillo hitCarter Mann with a 7-yard TD pass for a 15-0 lead.Buffalo Bills Coach of the Week3“Any time you can go 99 yards, it’s pretty amazing,”Faller said. “That was a great accomplishment by ourkids. It was a statement as to what our capability was andI think it also sent a message to West Seneca East.”The drive totally deflated West Seneca East and themomentum totally shifted the Panthers way. Sweet Homeled 21-0 at the half.Faller acknowledged that most area fans were rootingagainst the Panthers.“I don’t know if people thought the streak would end orif they just wanted it to end,” he said. “We still have abullseye on our back. We are still a big mark for someoneto get if they can.”Faller said hewas proud of thisyear’s teambecause they wonanother titledespite not havinga bona fide star onthe roster.“They are differentfrom pastteams,” Fallersaid. “Every teamis different. Wedon’t have aPlayer of the Yeartype kid this year.We have talentedplayers but thisgroup works hardfor everything theyPhoto by Buffalo BillsSweet Home coach John Faller was named the Coach of the Week bythe Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guard after his Panthers won theClass A championship with a 28-7 win over West Seneca East.get.”The Panthersstill run the sameoffense but theyare quicker tochange.“There are changes every year,” Faller said. “We adaptto the kids we have each year. Maybe that’s why we keepwinning.”Faller said that he was especially pleased that thisyear’s group of players was able to continue the amazingrun of championships.“This is a pretty good group to work with,” he said.“These kids get along and play well together. That hasgone a long ways for us.”Faller also said that his staff of assistants are animportant part of the Panthers program.“They give the award to me but we work together andit’s everybody’s award. Mike Faulks (line coach), MikeTorrillo (defensive assistant coach) and James Bialasik(defensive assistant coach) are there everyday helping tomake the kids better.”

Orchard Park’s ‘Great 8’By Mark AdairAustin Goltz had a huge night as he helped OrchardPark to a 35-20 win over Jamestown in the Class AAchampionship game.“He played great,” Tundo said. “Austin had a fantasticgame.”Goltz caught 4 passes for 57 yards and a pair of TDs.He also intercepted a pass -and had another interceptionwiped out by a questionableinterference call.“Austin is very dynamic,”coach Gene Tundo said. “Hecan do a lot of things. He hasgreat hands. He’s quick andhe’s strong.”Goltz is one of the fewplayers at Orchard Park tohave started on both offenseand defense, as he starts atWR and DB.“We haven’t had too manykids who have done that,”Tundo said. “He’s a greatreceiver and he can carry theball, which he does sometimes.”Goltz is also important tothe offense when he doesn’thave the ball.“He also does a lot ofblocking for our runningbacks,” Tundo said. “In someof our schemes, he’s the leadblocker.”Goltz is also versatile ondefense.“We have him at cornerback,”Tundo said, “He playsin Man coverage or zone coverage. He could play linebackeror safety, too. He’s very unique. He does whateverwe need him to.”He started last season and helped the Quakers wintheir second state championship.“He made several great plays in the semifinal gameagainst Binghamton,” Tundo said, “and he played very wellin State championship game.”Against Jamestown, Goltz opened the scoring in thesecond quarter when he caught a 28-yard TD pass fromBen Holmes. He gave Orchard Park a 21-14 lead when hecaught an 11-yard TD pass.“Both scores where check offs,” Tundo said. “Ben threwit up and Austin made a great adjustment. Austin re-directedand a made a great play.”Goltz intercepted a pass in the second quarter to end aJamestown drive. He also intercepted a pass in the endzone in the fourth quarter but he was called for interferenceon the play.“It was not a penalty,” Tundo said. “He made a great, great play on the ball.”Goltz is one of the Quakers more athletic players.“He is one of the best basketball players at OrchardPark,” Tundo said. “He’s a team captain and the best playeron the lacrosse team.”Goltz usually plays attackon the lacrosse team but, lastspring, showed his versatilityin that sport, too.“In Section 6 title gameagainst Clarence, we movedhim to midfield,” Tundo said.“We needed someone whohad speed and his ability.Even though he was out ofposition, he had an amazinggame. He is that kind of anathlete. You don’t get a kid likethat over the course of yourcareer. You don’t get manykids who are good at threesports.”Goltz is also a solid student, maintaining an academicaverage on the 90s.“To be a 3-sport athlete andhave the grades that he does,”Tundo said, “He really has itall together.”Goltz will attend Princetonnext fall on a lacrosse scholarship.Photo by Mark AdairOrchard Park’s Austin Goltz caught 2 TD passesand intercepted a pass in the Quakers 35-20 winover Jamestown in the Class AA title game.5He says that“We had a better talent lastyear,” Goltz said. “We hadthree linemen above 300pounds. This year, it’s not anyone guy. We have heart andsoul. Even if we are down, we get right back in the saddleand keep playing hard.”Goltz also had a new experience this season... losing. When Jamestown beat Orchard Park 35-28 earlier thisseason, it was the first football game he did not walk offthe field as a winner.“For the kids in my grade, that was our first time losinga football game since the seventh grade,” he said. “Thebus ride home was pretty quiet. Everyone knew we had aresponsibility and we didn’t fulfill that.”He said that the entire team dedicated itself to neverlosing another game.“The next day at practice everyone worked harder thanI have ever seen them work,” he said. “Losing was notgoing to become a routine. CoverStoryBy Mark AdairMighty MouseWNY’s smallest player leads Ellicottville to DD ChampionshipEllicottville roared outto a 34-0 lead at the halfand won the Class DDtitle with a 34-16 win overClymer at Ralph WilsonStadium last week.Sophomore RB PhallaMusall led the offense ashe ran for 149 yards and2 TDs on 25 carries. With Ellicottville leading14-0, Musall scoredthe biggest TD of thegame when he brokethrough the line and ranuntouched for a 42-yardscore.“We ran a ‘26G Lead’,”Ellicottville coach TimBergan said. “We pull ourleft guard, the fullbackled through the hole andPhalla was untouched.Once he was out in front,it was a footrace and itwas no footrace. He wasgone. The only thing theywere looking at was hisheels.”And while Musall hada great performance duringthe game, he saysthat his favorite part ofthe day came as hewalked with his teammatesthrough the tunneland onto the field before the game.“It was amazing,” he said. “To walk through the tunnelthat all those great football players have walked down...wow. I can’t even explain how it feels. It’s just amazing.”The day was the perfect end to a fantastic season forMusall, who rushed for 1,333 yards and 14 TDs.Musall is also a odd case. He is hardly a ‘physicalspecimen’ as one might expect from a punishing runner. In fact, Musall is the smallest player in WNY as hestands just 5-foot-3 and weighs 130 pounds.“People can’t believe he’s even on the team,” Bergansaid. “But when you see him knock people down that are6-1 and 200 pounds, you get your eyes opened. Whenyou see the results of what he does, it’s really incredible.”Photo by Mark AdairEllicottville Phalla Musall is the smallest player in WNY. Herushed for 149 yards and 2 TDs to lead the Eagles to a win in theClass DD championship game last week.20Throughout the game,Musall launched himselfinto far bigger playersand flattened them.Several times he corralledClymer’s star RBDan Wiggers andbrought him down.“Phalla has no fear,”Bergan said. “He had anumber of solo tackleson one of the better runningbacks around.Phalla could have beenthe Offense and theDefensive player of thegame.”Musall, who hasseven brothers and sisters, also has an unusualstory.Kathleen and GerryMusall had two childrenthe old-fashioned way.And then they adoptedsix more children fromvarious parts of Asia.Phalla came fromCambodia when theMusall’s adopted the boyand his twin sisterDaneth (who plays onthe Ellicottville girls soccerteam.)“We got Phalla in2000, when he and hissister were 3 years old,” Gerry Musall said. “My wife and Ifound that, the younger the kids were when we adoptedthem, the easier the transition was.”Raising children is always difficult... but dealing withadopted children from other countries brings special hurdlesto overcome.“Asian children are smaller than most kids,” GerryMusall said. “When we adopted two of our children, theagency we were working with told us they were threeyears old. It turned out, they were really six years old.”The transition to becoming an American child wasmuch more difficult on the older children.“Phalla and his sister had a much easier time makingSee “Cover Story” on page 23

CoverStorycontinued from page 22the transition to the English language because they wereso much younger when they came here,” Gerry said.Phalla, like the rest of his siblings, was drawn to athleticswhen he was younger.“All of my kids played sports,” Gerry said. “Phalla reallyliked football and baseball from the time he was veryyoung.”Musall says he was asked to play midget football bysome of his friends.“My friends noticed I was fast,” he said. “They told me Ishould play football and that it would be fun.”Musall also learned that if he was going to play football,he would have to learn to dish out hits that would earn therespect of players who were much bigger than he was.“I’ve always been smaller than everyone else,” Phallasaid. “I took a beating from everyone else but I learnedthat size doesnt matter. I worked out to make myselfstronger so I could hit, too.”Bergan says he knew Phalla would be a player on hisfootball team years ago.“From the time he was in elementary school he was arunning back,” Bergan said. “He took his midget team tothe Super Bowl. Back then, all he did was run aroundeverybody. No one could catch him.”Bergan had to teach Musall a different style of runningwhen the player reached the Ellicottville high school program.“He found out we have a lot of fast players on the varsity,”Bergan said. “He couldn’t just run around everybody. He actually had to learn to follow blockers and look for theholes. It took him a year but he really found himself thisseason.”The Musall family was rocked last summer whenPhalla’s mom, Kathleen Musall was killed in a motorcycleaccident in nearby Great Valley.“It was a kick in the guts,” Gerry Musall said. “I think itwas the hardest on my two biological children, they are theoldest kids. But Phalla was close to his mom, too.”Phalla found out about the accident when he returnedfrom a fun day at the Cattaraugus County Fair.“I came home from the fair and my brother told me whathappened,” he said. “She and my sister were riding bikes. My sister was there when it happened. It didn’t seem real.”Phalla says that the past year has been difficult.“It’s been different and pretty hard,” Phalla said, “but I’msticking in there and playing hard for my mom. She wasthere for every single one of my games.”This season, Phalla played with two stickers on his helmet. One says ‘8-12-11’, the date that Kathleen was killed. The other says simply ‘Mom’.“I think about her before every game,” he said. “I knowshe would have been there watching.”Phalla says he felt her presence at The Ralph.“She would have been really proud of me in the championshipgame,” he said. “The way we played, she wouldhave been really proud.”21Tune in toTALKFOOTBALL!!Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!!Tony Caligiuri Sean Bruso Mike Ferrentino Roger Weiss(716) 803-0550
