3racial justiceRacial Justice Dialogues: Using films and books asa catalyst to encourage youth and adults to challengetheir own prejudices, we foster conversationsabout the impact of racism on all our lives.Community Engagement: We work with organizationsand institutions that share our commitmentto addressing racial issues through initiativesdesigned to create action-driven results.Eliminating Racism Training and Facilitation: Weserve as a resource and provide training onrace issues.Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hatebrings thousands of people from throughoutChicagoland together to walk, run, and raceagainst hate, joining the YWCA in advocating foran end to racism and violence.In 2010, 3,950 people from all overChicagoland came together in 2010 toRace Against Hate.The Race raised $172,000 to supportthe YWCA’s programs, particularly inthe areas of violence prevention andracial justice.domestic violence services24-Hour Crisis Intervention offers couseling,service referrals and emergency shelter .Bilingual Women’s Advocates and Children’sCounselors provide individual and group counseling,case management services, parent/childclasses and workshops on health education andjob readiness for women in shelter and in thecommunity.Court Based Legal Advocates help women secureorders of protection from their abusers andprovide legal information, referrals and emotionalsupport.2,087 calls from women in crisis werefielded, and 529 women and childrenreceived emergency shelter. We helped558 women obtain orders of protection.

4629 school children role-played waysto diffuse tension, resolve conflict andaddress bullying; and 423 teenagerslearned about teen dating violence andhealthy relationships.violence preventionBuilding Healthy Relationships helps studentsbuild the social-emotional skills they need to treatone another with respect and dignity as theymature.At the elementary school level, we talk aboutimpulse control, problem-solving, and bullying;helping children learn constructive approaches tohandling anger, conflict, and differences.At the middle school level, we focus on adolescentbehaviors like jealousy, gossip, social networkingand avoiding the peer pressure and stereotypingwhich can lead to unhealthy patterns of abuseand violence.At the high school level, our curriculum is gearedtowards helping teens and young adults recognizewhat is healthy and harmful as they begin toengage in dating and intimate relationships.We partner with colleges and universities aroundissues of campus dating violence, providing training,education, counseling and support groups forboth students and staff.flying fish aquaticsLearn-to-Swim Program seeks to teach all childrenin our community to be safe in the water.150 families in need were given financialassistance so their children could learnto swim.Flying Fish Swim Team encourages youth tobecome empowered through sport, and to createan environment in which commitment, innerstrength, self-confidence, and respect for oneanother are fostered.Masters Swimming and Aqua Aerobics provide apositive recreational outlet to adults.550 Flying Fish swimmerschallenged their mental andphysical strength and raised$98,000 in the swim marathon tosupport YWCA programs thatbenefit the entire community.Our partnership with Make A Splashand USA Swimming Foundation,coupled with generous donations to our swimmingscholarship fund, enables us to expandprograms to reach underserved youth in the communityand help diversify the sport of swimming.

why you’re so importantWe are moved daily by the generosity of ourindividual donors. In the past year alonehundreds of people and organizations madein-kind contributions to the YWCA and MaryLou’s Place – everything from baby blanketsand tooth paste to holiday meals and officefurniture .More than 125 people have volunteered theirtime regularly in a wide variety of ways– forexample, reading to children, answering thecrisis line, planting flowers, wrapping holidaygifts and painting the fence around our playground.An additional 300 people helpedwith the Race Against Hate.In the midst of an economic downturn anddwindling government funding, privategiving* increased 17% and the number ofpeople giving at $1,000 or more increased32%. Our mission-driven work could notbe sustained without the generosity of ourdonors.Charitable gifts, particularly major gifts, providecritical support in the current economicclimate, because of shrinking governmentfunding. 8why we give“The capital campaign for the new poolseveral years ago really changed the way thatour family thought about our giving. Whenthe YWCA started raising money for the pool,they looked for a few families to jump startthe campaign with substantial leadershipgifts. The amount was far greater than anygift we had ever made, but the vision for theprogram was so compelling. A few largercontributions were clearly essential, and weknew that we were fortunate to be able toconsider making one. We took a deep breathand wrote a big check, and a few monthslater wrote another one. We found such tremendoussatisfaction in seeing the impact ofwhat the YWCA community achieved! It completelychanged the way that we approachedcharitable giving.“We are now aware of all the good the YWCAis doing in our community and we makedonations at a significantly higher level, bothto the YWCA and to other organizationsthat have been meaningful in some way inour lives.
