X-ray Inspection of
Pumped Food
Safety. Right from the start.
X-ray inspection systems deliver high
levels of contaminant detection in
pumped food products, ranging from
meat and poultry to liquids, slurries
and semi-solids like jams, sauces,
soups and yogurts.
There are several factors which need
to be taken into account when inspecting
pumped food products,
such as the possibility of air bubbles,
variations in the flow speed and location
of the x-ray system on the
production line.
Our white paper, “Improving the Safety
of Pumped Food Products”, looks
at these factors and explains how to
overcome them.
Hygienic Floor Scales
Work Horses for Wet & Harsh Environment
Fixed installation, liftable, or mobile solutions, hygienically designed floor scales provide
enormous flexibility in production planning and are built for fast and efficient cleaning
procedures. Depending on your application, different models may suit. The selection of the
appropriate floor scale enhances food safety and increases production performance.
Floor scales used in wet and harsh environments
are confronted with heavy
loads, rough handling, waste material
and are regularly flooded with water during
cleaning procedures. To ensure safe
food production, floor scales must be
built and installed according to sound
sanitary design principles, resist corrosive
environments, withstand cleaning detergents
and allow simple and frequent
loading, weighing and unloading.
METTLER TOLEDO builds different types
of floor scales all specifically designed for
maintaining sanitation in wash down areas.
The rugged design and stainless
steel construction enable these scales to
stand up to tough industrial environments.
Their ingress protection starts
from IP65 for light wash down procedures
and goes up to an IP69k protected
scale constructed to withstand high pressure
cleaning.
Several construction types simplify and
accelerate the regular cleaning procedure.
Ultra low profile floor scales
(PUA5../PUA6../PUA7..)*
Low profile floor scales are built to safely
and quickly move loads on and off the
platform. This floor scale line combines
robust construction, easy-to-clean surfaces,
and an exceptionally low profile
with short ramps. Two construction types
are available: one stand alone fixed model
and a lift version. On the lift version, a
pair of built-in gas springs enables one
person to lift the scale manually with
minimal effort for cleaning the ground
underneath the scale.
Work horses – basic floor scales
Floor scales from METTLER TOLEDO are
used in dusty and humid areas. All types
can be placed on the floor, mounted on adjustable
feet or installed into prepared pit
Easy to lift. Low profile floor scales: For easy loading. Just move it.
frames. The M line focuses on providing
a multi interval weighing range with
three different resolutions in one scale.
These work horses can be used for many
applications when combined with a
broad range of accessories.
Highest accuracy on the floor
(K line)*
The K line stands for highest accuracy
with a maximum precision up to
6000e/7500e (single range). Built to
stand on the floor or in a pit, their capacity
starts from 300 kg x 2 g up to 3000 kg
x 50 g. These provide a broad weighing
range for maximum flexibility.
Easy to lift (PFA5../-7../-8..lift)*
Liftable floor scales can be installed on
top of a floor or in a pit and combine
stainless steel construction with complete
access for cleaning. METTLER TOLEDO
offers two types: manual or automatic

lifting. In case of a manual operation
only the top plate lifts exposing the inside
of the scale and pit, whereas the automatic
version is equipped with pneumatic
cylinders that lift the entire scale.
At the flip of a switch, the automatic version
tilts up 45°. For safety reasons this
version can be locked to prevent unauthorized
personnel from operating the
system. Both types can be handled by a
Vehicle Scales
6 METTLER TOLEDO Newsletters 1/2012
Serving the Palm Oil Industry
Top Quality Vehicle Scales for Tropical Climate
The tropical climate of Southeast Asia is humid and thunderstorms are common. Electronic
components are prone to failure when left out in the elements due to moisture and frequent
lightning. However, truck scales using the POWERCELL PDX ® load cell network have
proven to be reliable in any environment, including Malaysia. Customers like palm oil producer
Sime Darby are using this reliability to their advantage.
Oil palm trees were first planted commercially
in Malaysia in 1917 by William Sime
and Henry Darby, founders of Sime Darby.
Today, about 45% of the world’s palm oil is
produced in Malaysia with Sime Darby being
the largest palm oil producer in the
world, producing over 2.4 million tons annually.
Sime Darby Plantation operations
include 42 oil mills in Malaysia and another
23 mills in Indonesia. In total, the company
manages over 530,000 hectares (1.3
million acres) planted with oil palm trees.
Oil palm trees require a tropical climate
and are typically found within 20º of the
equator. The oil palm fruit is made up of
an oily, fleshy outer layer and a single seed
kernel. Roughly 22% of the fruit can be
extracted as oil, producing significantly
higher yields than other seed oils. The
palm fruit is reddish and is typically 3–5 cm
in length. It grows in large bunches referred
to as fresh fruit bunches or FFB.
Palm oil is reasonably priced and is high
in natural antioxidants. It is a very com-
Courtesy Malaysian Palm Oil Council
mon cooking ingredient throughout
Southeast Asia and the tropical belt of
Africa. In recent years, its use in commercial
food processing applications has
been growing around the world. There is
also growing demand for palm oil in biodiesel
as a source of renewable fuel.
Producing palm oil
Harvesting the FFB is a delicate process
that requires highly skilled workers. The
FFB grows high in the trees and weighs
30–50 kg (65–110 lb) when ripe. They
are cut with a blade on a long pole and
fall as much as 20 m (60 feet) to the
ground. It is critical to begin the milling
process the same day the FFB is cut from
the tree to preserve the quality of the oil.
Free fatty acids begin to form in the FFB
once it is cut. The acids, which degrade
the quality of the oil, continue to rise
within the FFB until it undergoes the
steam sterilization process at the mill.
Mills receive the FFB, extract the oil from
the pulp of the fruit, and collect the ker-
Palm fruit. Recently cut fresh fruit bunch (FFB). Refined palm oil.
nels from the fruit center. The extracted
oil is then sent to a refinery where the oil
is further processed into edible oil. Sime
Darby Plantation’s East Oil Mill on Carey
Island is one of the company’s larger
mills, producing 400 tons of oil per day.
The mill has been steadily growing since
it was opened in 1983. The mill currently
has 109 employees working 3 shifts. They
are continuously improving and automating
their processes.
The POWERCELL ® Advantage
Vehicle weighing is an essential part of
the mill process. Fruit bunches are
brought to the mill on trucks or tractorpulled
wagons from all around the region.
The loads are weighed for payment
and inventory control. Once the oil is
milled, it is put into large tankers that
are weighed as they leave the facility on
their way to the refinery.
In 2008, the East Oil Mill purchased a new
truck scale to keep up with the growth of
the business. The new scale is longer so
Outbound tanker weighing 47 tons. Incoming truck load of fresh fruit bunches.
that it can handle the larger tankers that
are needed to ship the crude palm oil to
the refinery. The scale is powered by
POWERCELL load cells and an IND310
terminal from METTLER TOLEDO.
Lightning protection
In Malaysia’s tropical climate, a large
percentage of the annual rainfall comes
from thunderstorms. Lightning is a common
threat and a major cause of downtime
for nearly all truck scales in the region.
However, METTLER TOLEDO
POWERCELL load cells come with the
StrikeShield Lightning Protection System.
StrikeShield technology protects the
entire scale system, including load cells,
cables and terminal.
The Manager of the East Oil Mill,
Bakhtiar Effendy Bin Kamaludin, has
been very pleased with the new scale. The
accuracy of the scale system has been excellent
and they have not experienced
any lightning damage or downtime with
the new scale. Uptime is critical to the
mill, especially since the FFB needs to be
processed shortly after it is cut. They
cannot afford to shut down their process
because of a problem with a truck scale.
Teras Integrasi, a large METTLER
TOLEDO distributor in Malaysia, has
been providing Sime Darby with MET-
TLER TOLEDO solutions and excellent
service for many years. In addition to
selling the new scale, Teras Integrasi
provided weight management software to
the mill. They also provide preventive
Easy-to-use, Compact Solution
Ensures The Highest Quality
Farmer’s Snack GmbH places great emphasis on maintaining the high
quality of its products. The Hamburg-based company has been relying
on METTLER TOLEDO inspection solutions for many years to meet its
quality standards.
The XE3 CC CombiChecker supports the
stringent requirements of Farmer’s Snack
in assuring highest quality not only
checking product weight, but also inspecting
all products in the same step to
ensure that there are no traces of metal
present. As such, even the smallest differences
and deviations in the natural produce
can be verified using the checkweigher,
enabling the company to guarantee
consistently high quality for its end
customers.
The XE3 CC CombiChecker
checks every pack to make sure
it has the correct weight and is
free of any metal traces
“During the dry fruit filling process,
products can get stuck in the multi-head
weigher,” explains Hardy Krause, Technical
Director at Farmer’s Snack. “These
products can then cause packs to be under
or overfilled,” he continues. The
CombiChecker rejects from the production
line any packs that do not conform
to the specified weight, thereby constantly
checking the filling process of the
multi-head weigher.
Metal detection systems also ensure quality on
other production lines at Farmer’s Snack.
With the combined checkweigher/metal
detector system, Garvens offers Farmer’s
Snack a compact solution for checking
product weight and reliably detecting any
foreign bodies in a single procedure, and
enables the company to comply with all
quality assurance criteria as per FDA or
IFS. The CombiChecker also provides
comprehensive reports and, thanks to its
large product setup memory, central inventory
management for all products.
This allows Farmer’s Snack to quickly
switch between the items it produces.
The XE3 CC CombiChecker
provides a clearly structured
evaluation of key production data
“We used to take random samples of our
products for testing,” explains Hardy
Krause. “But the CombiChecker inspects
every single pack. This not only guarantees
the correct product weight, it also
saves us a great deal of time and makes
our whole production process smoother.”
Due to the extremely high accuracy of
both the checkweigher and metal detector,
the XE3 CC CombiChecker is optimally
suited to the company’s diverse
product range. The Garvens Combi-
Checker categorizes the weighed products,
i.e. fruit mixes, precisely into up to
three weight zones. Its metal detector is
available with two detection frequencies
– ideal for companies like Farmer’s
Snack which process an extensive product
range.
Demands of Tougher Standards
Met By Due Diligence Enhancements
If a metal-contaminated product reaches the consumer, the repercussions could
be catastrophic. By using a metal detector with Due Diligence Enhancement,
manufacturers can be confident that their products meet required quality standards
and their brand is protected.
The Due Diligence Enhancement from
METTLER TOLEDO Safeline helps manufacturers
comply with increasingly tough
standards, by strengthening control and
security at critical control points (CCP)
on processing and packing lines.
Failsafe functionality
Multiple design features ensure the due
diligence enhancement delivers an increased
level of failsafe functionality, resulting
in increased product safety as
well as compliance with standards and
legislation. Manufacturers also benefit
through avoiding the risk of costly recalls
and potential damage to their reputation.
The key focus is ensuring that contaminated
packages are properly removed.
This is achieved through a fully automated
rejection system, with a reject confirmation
sensor to ensure that the correct
pack is removed, and a secondary reject
check sensor further along the conveyor
belt that provides additional security.
Guarding against procedural error
It is widely held that a common cause of
contaminated products reaching the
consumer is procedural error rather than
the failure of an inspection device. The
enhanced system features a tunnel guard
on the out-feed conveyor to prevent external
interference, and a lockable reject
bin, only accessible via the detector’s
password-protected interface. These features
reduce the risk of rejected packs reentering
the production process.
The Profile metal detection system records
all detector and operator activity, providing
evidence that all necessary control
measures have been taken. It also features
Condition Monitoring technology to provide
advance warning of adverse trends,
which helps to minimize downtime.
The combination of quality detector and
control equipment, sensing devices and
failsafe mechanisms results in a system
optimized to meet compliance needs and
maximize the opportunity to prove due
diligence.
White Paper –
Enhancing Levels of
Due Diligence
It is an ever increasing responsibility
of manufacturers to take every precaution
to ensure that their products
are safe, free from contamination
and are unlikely to harm the end
consumer in any way.
This new white paper introduces the
concept of Due Diligence and explains
its importance in terms of providing
a basis for a legal defense if a
customer claims to have found metal
contamination in a food product. It
identifies how a metal detection system,
if suitably configured, can help
you meet your due diligence needs,
and also conform to the seven
HACCP principles.
Excellence in Milling Combined
With Cutting-Edge Weighing Technology
Swissmill in Zurich is Switzerland’s biggest flour and semolina producer. Several
mills operate in Zurich: two mills for grinding soft wheat; one each for durum wheat,
corn, and oats; and a specialty mill. Swissmill is IFS and BRC certified and serves a
wide range of customers, from small village bakeries, bread factories and retailers
to food processing operations.
The total annual output of soft wheat,
durum wheat, corn, and oats is 200 000
tons. On high-speed packaging lines –
for packages up to 5 kg – around 15 million
items are bagged and controlled
yearly. During packaging, Swissmill
must verify net content as well as rule out
metal contamination to comply with average
weight legislation and to ensure
consumers safety.
Product inspection
With METTLER TOLEDO product inspection
systems, both net content and metal
contamination are controlled and faulty
packages are rejected. Swissmill has integrated
four Garvens checkweighers and
Safeline metal detectors in its packaging
lines. The detectors can weigh up to 800
items per minute and are designed to
meet HACCP guidelines. With a stainless
Garvens checkweigher and Safeline metal detector.
steel construction and easy-to-clean design,
hygienic compliance is made easy.
The combined metal detector and checkweigher
unites the advantages of both inline
weight monitoring and metal detection
in a compact system.
Net content control
To comply with average weight legislation,
Swissmill has successfully implemented
SQC14 – a compact Statistical
Quality Control system from METTLER
TOLEDO. Net content is statistically reported
and the results are graphically
represented on printouts. Trend analysis
software triggers alarms to alert the operators
when filling machines are tending
to under- or overfill. Unnecessary
overfilling can be avoided and net content
control is simplified.
Laboratory
Consistently high quality is crucial for
Swissmill. In the laboratory, raw materials,
semi-finished and finished products
are regularly quality tested. METTLER
TOLEDO analytical instruments such as
the SevenEasy pH-meter or the DL50
titrator, as well as halogen moisture analyzers
such as HB43 or XP precision balances
ensure that quality parameters are
systematically checked and optimized.
Mr. Eigenmann, Production Manager,
concludes: “Swissmill is continuously updating
production processes and systems,
ensuring the market will be supplied with
innovative, competitive, high-quality
products also in the future. With the support,
great performance and wide range
of products, METTLER TOLEDO is helping
us to be successful in our business.”
