He hasbeen associated with andhas worked for Butlerbased,Quality Life Services(QLS) since October2001—first as a staff PT at the QLS-owned ChicoraMedical Center and Sugar Creek Rest and then as aSite Supervisor at Chicora for six years.Barnes is currently the Blue Sky Therapy (BST)Regional Manager for all of the QLS and NugentGroup nursing and personal care homes found in theWestern Pennsylvania region. “Also, I’ve been a CertifiedEden Associate since June of 2010, which helpsto promote culture change in nursing homes to combatfeelings of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom ofour elders,” he adds. Barnes notes that this missionstatement of BST represents an individualized, quality,patient-centered care that is in line with its nursinghome partners.Artistically, Barnes tries to promote the positive storiesof therapy and nursing home care by capturingsome of its happier moments through his photographyand writing about many elders’ success stories. Healso explains how his affinity for taking photographsbegan at an early age. “Like many amateur photographers,I started taking pictures for my high schoolnewspaper at Upper Saint Clair. As a kid, I always especiallyenjoyed photograph- ing professional baseball, hockey, and football players while they were inaction—and I guess it just grew from there!”Almost as an opposite reaction to the empirical requirementsof working in healthcare, creatively capturingpositive reflections of life is what Barnes feelshas drawn him to photography. “My scientific sidetaught me to document the facts, but my artistic sidedrives me to capture the positive experiences and emotionsin people’s lives. It is kind of like a scrapbookArtistsAmongUsof a fraction ofall the goodwe do in therehabilitationprofession.”Barnes realizes that he is very fortunate to have theopportunity to blend his creative interests with his profession.“I am blessed to be able to incorporate myartistic outlet with my professional career by usingphotos and success stories towards the promotion ofBST’s innovative therapy services and our nursinghome partners’ skilled rehabilitation abilities.”Since his artistry is now so linked to his healthcarework, Barnes can definitely ‘picture’ himself in a moreprominent artistic role—especially to continue showcasingthe positive aspects of healthcare. “If I didn’thave to work full-time, it would be a pleasure to highlightthe compassionate care so many professionals inthe healthcare field provide daily—as well as thehopeful, uplifting, success stories of their patients.Sometimes people only hear about the rare, negativeevents in healthcare (abuse, malpractice, neglect, etc.)that seem to appear at the public forefront moreoften—I would like to promote the far more prevalentgood news!”The photos printed here alongside the article (withpermission for release from BST’s QLS nursing homepartners) represent just some of the powerful, happyemotions of patients and therapists that Barnes hascaptured with his cameras. For more information on Blue Sky Therapy, pleasevisit: www.blueskytherapy.net.VITAS celebrates National Hospice& Palliative Care Month 2011Give Hospice the TimeYour Patient DeservesHospice focuses on the person, not the disease.Hospice is for months, not days.Hospice is about comfort, not crisis.Given the time, VITAS can do so much.
