Plateaus will occur at one time or another in every swimmer’s career. Plateaus occur in bothcompetition and in training. It is important to explain to the swimmer that plateaus occur in allfields of physical learning. The most successful swimmers are those who work through thismomentary delay in improvement.INCONSISTENCYTen and under swimmers are the most inconsistent in terms of performance. Theseinconsistencies can be frustrating for parents, coach and swimmer alike! We must be patientand permit these youngsters to learn to enjoy the sport.COMPETITIVE DRIVEParents must realize that slow development of competitive drive at an early age is normal, andperhaps even more desirable than a precocious or forced early development. It is importantthat swimmers learn to compete and develop some competitive spirit. The spirit ofcompetition, however, can be overdone.Avoid comparing your child to his nearest competitors; this creates vendettas within the teamand swimming community and often leads to poor sportsmanship and feelings of low selfesteem.I prefer to stress swimmers competing with themselves by trying to improve their best time orlearn something new. This keeps it in the realm of things they can control. We cannot controlwhat Suzie Swimmer from down the street does.STRESS, DISAPPOINTMENTS, FEEDBACKIt is valuable for children to learn to adapt to reasonable levels of emotional stress includingdisappointment. The small disappointments we experience as children prepare us for those wemust handle as adults. The swimmer can experience stress when constructive criticism isoffered on his/her performance. Remember that this is the coach’s job…yours as parents is tooffer love, support recognition and encouragement as needed.Young swimmers need to feel good about themselves and parents are in the most powerfulposition to achieve this. Swimmers who receive constant negative feedback from parents willsoon lose interest in the sport. In swimming as in life, nobody can win or succeed all the time;there will be some disappointments.INFECTIOUS ATTITUDESParent’s attitudes “rub off” on children. Children continuously and subconsciously absorb yourfeeling and biases on many topics. If you want your swimmer to be motivated, you should be
