Glossary of Terms (adapted from US Swimming Rule Book)Swimmers tend to have their own language. The following will help ensure you understandwhat we are talking about.AGE GROUP SWIMMINGAge Group Swimming is the program through which USS provides fair and open competition foryounger members. Sometimes used interchangeably with “recreational swimming,” though it isdifferent.COURSEThe designated distance over which a competition is conducted. “Long Course” is 50 meters (55yards to be recorded as 50 meters). “Short Course” is 25 yards or 25 meters.DECK ENTERED MEETMeet where all entries are accepted on the first day or later day of the meet and aresubsequently seed into events.DECK SEEDED MEETMeet where all entries are due prior to the first day of the meet and swimmers must declaretheir availability to swim prior to the scratch deadline.DISQUALIFICATION (DQ)Officials may disqualify a swimmer from an event for any infraction of the rules.DUAL COMPETITIONA competition between two clubs.EVENTAny race or series of races in a given stroke or distance.FALSE STARTLeaving prior to the “go” command. Also, any unnecessary delay of the meet.FREE RELAYFour swimmers on each team swim ¼ of the prescribed distance using any desired stroke(s).Freestyle finish rules apply.HEATSA division of an event in which there are too many swimmers to compete at one time. TimedFinal Heats are competitions in which only heats are swum and final placements aredetermined by the times of the swimmers.INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY (IM)
An event in which the swimmer swims the prescribed distance in the following order:First ¼ Butterfly Second ¼ Backstroke Third ¼ Breaststroke Fourth ¼ FreestyleINVITATIONAL COMPETITIONThe host club invites competition that is conducted only for those swimmers, organizations orclubs which.LANEThe specific area in which the swimmer is assigned to swim.LANE LINE (MARKER)The continuous floating markers attached to a line stretched from the starting end to theturning end for the purpose of separating each lane.LANE MARKINGSThe guidelines on the bottom of the pool and in the center of the lanes running from thestarting end to the turning end.LEG (RELAY)The part of the relay event that is swum by a single team member.MARKThe starting position assumed by the swimmer prior to the start of an event.MEDLEY RELAYFour swimmers on each team swim ¼ of the prescribed distance continuously using the fourstrokes in the following order:First ¼ Backstroke Second ¼ Breaststroke Third ¼ Butterfly Fourth ¼ FreestyleOPEN COMPETITIONCompetition which any qualified club, organization or individual may enter.RECREATIONAL SWIMMINGAny swimming program not under the auspices of USS swimming. (Platteville is included here).Sometimes also referred to as age group swimming though technically different.SCRATCH FROM AN EVENTWithdraw an entry (swimmer) from competition.SEEDThe process of distributing swimmers among the required number of heats and/or lanesaccording to their submitted times.
