Glossary of Terms (adapted from US Swimming Rule Book)Swimmers tend to have their own language. The following will help ensure you understandwhat we are talking about.AGE GROUP SWIMMINGAge Group Swimming is the program through which USS provides fair and open competition foryounger members. Sometimes used interchangeably with “recreational swimming,” though it isdifferent.COURSEThe designated distance over which a competition is conducted. “Long Course” is 50 meters (55yards to be recorded as 50 meters). “Short Course” is 25 yards or 25 meters.DECK ENTERED MEETMeet where all entries are accepted on the first day or later day of the meet and aresubsequently seed into events.DECK SEEDED MEETMeet where all entries are due prior to the first day of the meet and swimmers must declaretheir availability to swim prior to the scratch deadline.DISQUALIFICATION (DQ)Officials may disqualify a swimmer from an event for any infraction of the rules.DUAL COMPETITIONA competition between two clubs.EVENTAny race or series of races in a given stroke or distance.FALSE STARTLeaving prior to the “go” command. Also, any unnecessary delay of the meet.FREE RELAYFour swimmers on each team swim ¼ of the prescribed distance using any desired stroke(s).Freestyle finish rules apply.HEATSA division of an event in which there are too many swimmers to compete at one time. TimedFinal Heats are competitions in which only heats are swum and final placements aredetermined by the times of the swimmers.INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY (IM)
