True Sportis a national programdesigned to promote apositive, meaningful, andenriching experience for allwho participate in sport. It espouses importantprinciples such as fair play, respect for others, stayinghealthy, and having fun, allof which are synonymouswith school sport. In the context of an athletic competition, respect meansrespecting all those involved, including officials. Onoccasion, there are incidents of misconduct at OFSAAchampionships and some of these are the result of actionsor words directed towards officials; in other words, a lackof respect for officials.Officials are an important part of the competition and arethere to enforce the rules of the game so it is contested asfairly as possible. They are not out to intentionally impactthe outcome of a competition. Sometimes it may seemThe Bulletin | June 2008RESULTSBadminton.........................................................12 - 13Boys’ A Basketball.............................................14Boys’ AA Basketball..........................................15Boys’ AAA Basketball........................................16Boys’ AAAA Basketball......................................17Boys’ and Girls’ Curling.....................................20 - 21Girls’ Gymnastics..............................................22 - 23Boys’ A/AA & AAA/AAAA Hockey...................24Girls’ A/AA & AAA/AAAA Hockey...................25Alpine Skiing.....................................................26Nordic Skiing....................................................27Swimming.........................................................28 - 30Girls’ A Volleyball.............................................31Girls’ AA Volleyball...........................................32Girls’ AAA Volleyball........................................33Girls’ AAAA Volleyball......................................34Wrestling..........................................................35 - 36Thank you to the Ontario Ministry ofHealth Promotion and the Ministryof Education for their generouscontributions and support.that way, particularly if an official is not as experiencedas others, or if they are simply having a bad game. Doofficials make mistakes? Yes, but so do coaches andathletes.Coaches can teach respect to their athletes by the mannerin which they deal with officials. If a coach berates anofficial, this can typically lead to discipline problems in theplayers, lack of focus on the competition, and poor athleticperformance. Student-athletes may witness this and thinkit’s the norm, and even acceptable to berate the official, and may duplicate this behaviour when dealing with otherauthority figures in their lives. This isn’t to say that officials can’t be questioned becausethere should be a certain level of accountability. Buthandling disagreements or asking questions of officials in arespectful manner and at the appropriate time can have apowerful positive impact on the athletes and spectators. One of the great things about sport is the emotion itgenerates. There are a whole series of emotions that cometo life during the course of a competition, and certainlyover the entire season. One of the difficult challenges forathletes, coaches and officials is to control their emotionsand channel them in a positive way that will be admired byothers.Continued on page 2www.ofsaa.on.ca 1
