In this way, we better integrate our intellectual assets– our researchers – into the core university system andprovide greater access to federal and provincial researchfunding agencies.Ten years ago there was little talk among chiropractorsabout a career in research. Most of our doctors in Canadaare in clinical practice. In fact less than 1% of chiropractorsin Canada are engaged in research. Canadians aredisadvantaged with so few chiropractors undertakingfulltime research activities. But we have been busy providingopportunities to build our research capacity. With creative thinking and strategic planning, we areworking hard to take the clinical successes that chiropractorsexperience everyday in clinical practice andtranslate these successes into robust scientific research.Creating new knowledge and sharing this knowledgein measurable ways will improve the health of Canadians. Now, a fulltime career in chiropractic research is116 J Can Chiropr Assoc 2007; 51(2)

Research Bulletin #12indeed possible for chiropractors. Our role has been toprovide such opportunities. Our next generation of researchers will enter the systemin the coming years. People like Dr. Jeff Quon, Dr.Gabrielle van der Velde, Dr. John Srbely, Dr. Shari Wynd,Dr. Doug Lawson, Dr. Jason Busse, Dr. Ted Crowther,Dr. Mathieu Piché who are all PhD candidates will bejoining our current researchers. All of our researchershave distinguished themselves and represent our best opportunityto realize our full potential as a profession. Canadianswill certainly benefit with improved health. This year will hopefully see several more universitybasedChiropractic Research Chairs in place as part of theCCRF CIHR partnership program or the CCRF Universitypartnership program. Dr. Hayden’s research experience andexpertise includes prognostic research, systematic reviewmethods and musculoskeletal health, specifically lowback pain. Her current work at CREIDO focuses on prognosisresearch and the development of prognostic modelsfor disability outcomes in low back pain.Current university-based Research Chairs now include:• Dr. Greg Kawchuk DC, PhD at the University of Alberta,• Dr. Mark Erwin DC, PhD at the University ofToronto,• Dr. Jean-Sébastien Blouin DC, PhD at the Universityof British Columbia,• Dr. Martin Descarreaux DC, PhD at Université duQuébec à Trois-Rivières, and• Dr. Jill Hayden DC, PhD at the Toronto Western ResearchInstitute, University Health Network.Congratulations to Dr. Hayden! At the CCRF weenvision a university-based Chiropractic Research Chairin every province in Canada. We want to create a networkDr. Rob Allaby DCPresident, CCRFof Research Chairs that are firmly rooted and sustainable, who will mentor and train the next generation of chiropracticresearchers. This strategic planning will enable us to do our part inreducing the burdens of illness and disability that somany Canadians needlessly endure. We still need answersto research questions such as why only 11% of Canadiansvisit a chiropractor annually. Kawchuk’s researchin tissue mechanics, Erwin’s research in regenerative discbiology, Blouin’s research in neck stabilization mechanisms,Descarreaux’s research in muscle fatigue and neuromuscularcontrol of lumbar stability, and Hayden’sresearch in prognostic models for disability outcomes, are forging the pathways to many research answers.120 J Can Chiropr Assoc 2007; 51(2)

Research Bulletin #12As our capacity to undertake research continues togrow and develop, the need to find university homes forour researchers becomes more evident and critical. Thehealth research system in Canada is very competitive andwhile our researchers are few, they are indeed competitiveamongst the sharks. We congratulate them for the excellenceof their research. Our numbers are growing and shortly our impact willbe felt. When our research provides the unequivocal evidenceto answer important health questions that affect allCanadians, not just 11% of Canadians, the public’s confidencein the profession will be tremendously enhanced. That time is not far off! Each of you can help us recognize our goals and visionby becoming a member of the Foundation.Research Symposium Vancouver April 27–28The Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation (CCRF),the British Columbia Chiropractic Association (BCCA),and the University of British Columbia (UBC) are sponsoringResearch 2007: The Spine Care Revolution in Vancouveron April 27–28, 2007.
