It might be inferred from this that UK pricing policy can have only very limited effectson the pharmaceutical industry as a whole. However, as discussed in more detail below, thisis not the case.3.10 Table 3.1 shows the top ten brands and the top ten therapeutic classes by global sales in2005. The best-selling products are those which treat chronic conditions, where the patienttakes medicine on an ongoing basis. The best-selling drugs in 2005 were Lipitor and Plavix, the first treating high levels of cholesterol, and the second preventing hearth attacks andstrokes by targeting blood platelets. The two biggest selling drugs in 2004 were Lipitor andZocor, both of which are cholesterol-reducing drugs. The patent of Zocor has now expired inmost countries.Table 3.1: The top ten brands by global pharmaceutical sales 2005 and 2004Leading brands (2005) Type of drug Global Sales Global Sales2005 2004$bn % $bn %1 Lipitor (atorvastatin) Cholesterol-regulating drug 12.9 2.3 12.0 2.32 Plavix (clopidogrel) Antiplatelet drug 5.9 1.0 5.0 1.03 Nexium (esomeprazole) Ulcer-healing drug 5.7 1.0 4.8 0.94 Seretide/Advair Bronchodilator /corticosteroid(fluticasone+salmeterol) 5.6 1.0 4.7 0.95 Zocor (simvastatin) Cholesterol-regulating drug 5.3 0.9 5.9 1.16 Norvasc (amlodipine) Calcium-channel blocker 5.0 0.9 4.8 0.97 Zyprexa (olanzapine) Antipsychotic drug 4.7 0.8 4.8 0.98 Risperdal (risperidone) Antipsychotic drug 4.0 0.7 -- --9 Ogastro/Prevacid Ulcer-healing drug 4.0 0.7 3.8 0.7(lansoprazole)10 Effexor (venlafaxine) Antidepressant drug 3.8 0.7 3.7 0.7TOTAL Leading ten Brands $56.9 10.1 $53.6 10.3Source: IMS, ‘Global Pharmaceutical Perspectives 2005 and 2004’3.11 In 2005, 30 new chemical entities (NCE) were launched globally (compared with 30 in 2003and 31 in 2004).
