Coach CoursesCoach courses will meet 12 full days, usually Fridays, across the year in a designated school. Thecontent of each course will be the same, with a greater emphasis on either primary (K-2) or uppergrade (3-5) work. Participants will study how to create responsive, targeted instruction that is adaptedto the unique needs of particular classes. In order to answer the Common Core’s call for the acceleration of achievement, there is an all-handson-deckneed to study and develop methods and tools that can best help learners make progress.Coaches will be at the forefront of this effort, working with teachers to design ways to help all learnersreach the high expectations of the Common Core. Those who take these courses will have theopportunities to study, practice, and further develop the Project’s newest methods of coaching andinstruction as well as use newly developed tools such as performance assessments, rubrics, andlearning progressions to support teachers in creating exemplars and providing informative feedback tostudents. Above all, participants will learn how to support teachers in making data the center of theirpractice; studying ways to help teachers to gather and use data to tailor instruction and keep data-athandto work with students.Using the work of Charlotte Danielson and Norman Webb’s Depths of Knowledge as lenses, coacheswill also look at how to raise the level of cognitive demand placed on all students and ensure thetransference and application of learning across units, content areas, and grades. In addition, the courseswill offer opportunities to study how to support both teachers and students in setting and achievinggoals. Coaches will work to support teachers in involving students as invested partners in learning andwill emphasize students setting goals and creating action plans across the year. And, coaches will studyhow to keep Teacher Effectiveness criteria in mind as they coach and support teachers in raising thelevel of their literacy practice. Supporting teachers in accelerating the achievement of all learners hasnever been more challenging or more important and participants in these courses will engage in workthat will add to the thinking in this area. As always, the goal will be to learn how to help create andmaintain consistent progress across and within grades in a school. The Project's 2012-2013 Coach Courses are:Grade Emphasis Leader LocationK-5 with emphasis on K-2 Christine Holley Queens - PS 182K-5 with emphasis on 3-5 Christy Curran Manhattan - PS 59K-5 with emphasis on 3-5 Anne Taranto Manhattan - PS 158K-5 with emphasis on K-2 Shanna Schwartz Brooklyn - PS 29If you have any questions, please call Jessica @ 212-678-3579or email services@readingandwritingproject.com
