Environmental Information SheetAlpha Chlorpyrifos 48ECA 48% EC formulation containing chlorpyrifos, an organosphosphateinsecticide, for the control of many insect pests of agricultural and horticulturalcrops and forestry.MAXIMUM APPLICATION RATEMAFF number 048212.0 LITRES PRODUCT /HASectionProfile1. WILDLIFEMammalsandBirds2. BEES3. NON TARGETINSECTSAND OTHERARTHROPODS4. AQUATIC LIFEAlpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC is not classified as “Harmful to gameand wildlife”.No risk management is necessary to protect wild mammalsand birds. Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC, is of moderate toxicity tomammalian species and of high to moderate toxicity to birds. The risk to wild mammals and birds feeding on treated areas islow due to the low persistence of chlorpyrifos in theenvironment and the rapid decline of residues from the diet.Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC has a “High risk to bees”.Risk management is essential. “Do not apply to crops in floweror to those in which bees are actively foraging. Do not applywhen flowering weeds are present.”Chlorpyrifos does not have long-term activity on bee brood butit is advisable to close hives for at least 24 hours when beesmight forage in and around the treated area.Risk management advised. “Avoid spraying within 6 metres ofthe field boundary to reduce effects on non-target insects orother arthropods”.Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC is a broad spectrum insecticide andcan adversely affect non-target insect species. Precautionsshould be taken to avoid spray reaching hedgerows, beetlesbanks, conservation headlands. Field studies have shown thateffects are transitory and that populations will return to pretreatmentlevels, by recolonisation from untreated areas, providing suitable insect prey are available.Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC is “Extremely dangerous to fish orother aquatic life”.Risk management is essential. Whilst the toxicity of AlphaChlorpyrifos 48EC to aquatic invertebrates and fish is high, theproduct may be used safely providing care is taken to preventspray drift reaching surface waters. The following risk management practices must be carried out:-“Do not allow direct spray from broadcast air-assisted sprayingequipment to fall within 18 metres of surface waters or ditches.Do not allow direct spray from ground crop sprayers to fallwithin 5 metres of the top of the bank of any static or flowingwater body, or 1 metre from the top of any ditch which is dry atthe time of application.(Continued…)Version 1 4 th April 2002

AQUATIC LIFE1 metre of the top of the bank of any static or flowing water(Continued) body.Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC is unlikely to have any adverseeffects on algae and aquatic plants.LERAP Category A. Buffer zone may not be reduced.5. SOIL andGROUNDWATEREarthwormsSoil microorganismsChlorpyrifos has moderate persistence in soil. Initialbreakdown may be faster in calcareous soils. Soil microorganismsthen degrade the residues to carbon dioxide.Chlorpyrifos is strongly bound to soil and can be considerednot mobile. Consequently, there is negligible risk ofgroundwater contamination. No risk management necessary. Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC ismoderately toxic to earthworms. At recommended applicationrates, however, the risk to earthworms is low. Field studieshave demonstrated that chlorpyrifos is unlikely to have anyadverse effect on earthworm populations in the long-term.No risk management necessary. Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC isunlikely to have any long-term effect on soil microbial activity. The risk is therefore considered to be low.6. FIELDMARGINSChlorpyrifos has negligible activity to plants and, consequently,Alpha Chlorpyrifos 48EC should have no adverse effect onfield margin plants.ALWAYS READ THE LABEL: USE PESTICIDES SAFELYFor further information about the environmental profile of this product contact:-Address: Makhteshim-Agan (UK) Ltd, Unit 16 Thatcham Business Village, ColthropWay, Thatcham, Berkshire, RG19 4LWTel: 01635 860555 Fax: 01635 861555 Technical Hotline: 01635 876622This Environmental Information Sheet was prepared using Guidance DocumentVersion 2.1 dated 19 March 2002. copyright of Makhteshim Agan (UK) LtdVersion 1 4 th April 2002
