The award is a highly competitive support program forgraduate students and provides recognition of outstanding researchachievement. The award also attests to the interest ofIBM in her research. Dr. Ali Butt advises Li and had this to sayabout her award: "This award is highly competitive and recognizesthe student as well as the quality of the institution."Min Li and Dr. Ali ButtRecent graduate Alexander Obenauer creates apps and a startupAlexander Obenauer, aMay 2012 graduate ofthe computer sciencedepartment, was mentionedin a recent NewYork Times article entitled“Apps for NavigatingCampus Life.” His“Hungry Hokie” appwas mentioned withother apps created bystudents at Harvard,Carnegie Mellon, andYale.Since graduating, Obenauerhas been working full-timeon his startup “Mail Pilot.”He and recent biologicalscience graduate Josh Milasare hoping to reinvent e-mail. Their new startup,Mail Pilot, was recently featuredin the CollegiateTimes. Mail Pilot will helpusers treat their e-mail likea “to do” list. Since theCollegiate Times article waspublished, Obenauer andMilas have reached their fundraising goalthrough KickStarter.Read more about their project atwww.kickstarter.com/projects/1380180715/mail-pilot-email-reimagined.2010 PhD Graduate Dr. Hussein Ahmed wins two local HackathonsDr. Hussein Ahmed, a 2010 graduate of the computer science PhD program, wonthe Hokie Health Code-A-Thon. The event, managed by Health 2.0 and sponsoredby the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council and many local businesses, washeld April 13-14, 2012. Dr. Ahmed won the $2500 first place prize for his app called"HeyRecall” (signup.heyrecall.org).He followed that win with another in May, winning the Lujure Hackathon held onMay 11th and 12th. TheGrand Prize, for “BestUser Experience,” wasawarded to Bloombergand Mobients for their“Bloomberg Anywhere”submission. Dr. Pyla isthe User ExperienceLead at Bloomberg.According to the awardwebsite, “The aim of theawards is to significantlyraise the stature, understandingand awareness ofUser Experience. Phillips Professorof Engineering andthe director of the DiscoveryAnalytics Center,and Dr. Rex Hartson, professor emeritus in computerscience, on human computer interactionand machine learning activities as part of the pro-ject entitled "OrganizingCrawled Web Data forBrazilian Customers."According to Dr. Fox,"Several members of theVTX staff will work inDLRL this spring, so wecan teach about relevanttechnologies and demonstratea series of prototypes,running in theAmazon cloud, of portionsof the infrastructurethey are developing.VTX plans to supportmobile device basedprice comparison ofonline products foundon Brazil's WWW." Thesix month project willsupport approximatelynine graduate students.Kirk Cameron's MiserWare offers free product to measure carbon footprintDr. Kirk Cameron,professorof computerscience andChief ExecuteOfficer ofMiserWare,was recentlyrecognized inthe media for creating Granola Enterprise 5 thatwill help individuals and industry measure theircarbon footprint.
