WOMENS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPThe Women’s Basketball Championship (WBC) replaced the Women’s Basketball League (WBL) in 2009. I am excited toreturn to New Zealand and my hometown of Christchurch and have the opportunity towatch the second round of the Women’s Basketball Championship.Over the last few years, I have been coaching in Australia, working with two greatbasketball clubs in the Southern Eastern Australian Basketball League and this year,spent my first season as head coach of the West Coast Waves in the WANBL, basedin Perth. I am very privileged to have the opportunity to represent New Zealand in aleague that is one of the world's best and I hope I can inspire more New Zealandersto go further into the world of professional basketball.There are many things I respect and love about basketball in our country, and I am constantly overwhelmed bythe contributions that many of our basketball coaches, players and officials make. The one thing that stands outfor me is most coaches and players do this for next to nothing. Basketball is a self-funded venture and all thepeople of our women’s basketball community make huge sacrifices to make these events happen on a yearlybasis.The WBC provides the opportunity for you all to display your talent as players, and watch your hard work andpreparation materialise on court. As the tournament tips off, I am really looking forward to watching some qualityNew Zealand basketball over the weekend and seeing all of our emerging junior talent coming through, nurturedby our experienced basketball greats.
