AROUND THE PARISHES...Parish WalkOur next Parish walk - around the Roundwood lakes, will take placeon the last Sunday of the month after Church service.Time OutThe Monday evening study/discussion group has finished for thesummer. Most worthwhile, informative, challenging, inspiring andfriendly sessions were enjoyed by those attending and the series endedwith a meal out. The meal was a little thank you to Michael Croly forhis excellent leadership of the group. We look forward to starting againafter the summer and hope others will join us.ThoughtWhat is the most secure thing you have to hold on to in life.Remember if it is not able to be always there it is not a great security.Wealth, position and friends can all let us down but Jesus said ‘I willnever leave you nor forsake you!’ May each of us know that securityin a rapidly changing world.RATHDRUm & DERRAlOSSARyWiTH glENEAlyCanon John McCullagh. Holly Charlotte daughterof Joanna and Robert Thornton was baptised in Glenealy Parish Churchand Henry Max son of Imelda and Konrad Trankner was baptised in StSaviour’s both on Sunday 5 June. The pastoral introduction reminds us“Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continuesfor the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love. For allinvolved, particularly the candidates but also parents, godparents andsponsors, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has donefor us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring the faith.”BereavementPrayerful sympathy is extended to the children of the late KateWilson (Ballymoat) Patrick, Nicholas and Sofia, and to her partnerTeague, Kate was laid to rest in Glenealy churchyard on 26 May afterservice in St Francis Newcastle.BarbequeFlo and John Meredith hosted a wonderful barbeque assisted by thosewho made salads, desserts, donated raffle prizes, provided more desserts, erected marquees and the multitude of tasks which ensured everyonehad a good time. Even the ladies who seemed permanently attached tothe sink were as always full of good humour and it didn’t rain.Rambles round RathdrumThe local tidy towns group has issued a leaflet detailing the walksaround the town including one which crosses the delightfully namedfootstick bridge adjacent to a parish field. The rector has received, withthanks, a copy of a history of St Saviour’s School which was written byRebecca Snell in 1994 and a history of Glenealy Parish produced for itsbicentenary by the late John Corbett. These interesting and valuabledocuments would benefit from an updating as a further two decades havepassed indeed it could be said that our entire parish is full of history.Planning for the Parish SalePotting up plants, browsing among the books and beautifying the bricà brac are well in hand and the planners meet on 7 July to prepare forthe sale on 10 September.St Saviour’s School has raised funds for Team Hope’s waterproject in Africa as part of the pupils’ studies on water conservation. Acheque for €380, from a cake sale by pupils and a collection at a recentservice, was presented to Team Hope.4th to 6th classes paid a visit to St Colman’s Hospital to entertain theresidents both by playing recorders and singing. A number of pupils anda teacher went to Croke Park to accept the school’s third green flag. Thiswas the culmination of lots of hard work by the pupils and the GreenSchool committee co-ordinated by Deputy Principal, Helen Binions.Lots of other activities have been going on in our school includingpet week and a trip by the entire school to Clogga Strand where pupilscame into close contact with many elements of marine life including, not surprisingly, seawater. The end of year service will give theopportunity to thank God for the achievements throughout the yearand to ask God’s blessing on those who will advance into second-leveleducation in September.SnippetsCongratulations to Ethel Binions who celebrated the baptism ofanother great-grandchild before Easter, Ava Sarah-Anne , daughter ofTom and Stacey Woolmington. This has also been a time of loss andsadness as Ethel’s youngest sister Florrie Conley died Christmas weekand her sister-in-law Daisy Deacon on Easter Monday. Florrie lived formany years in Rathnew where she retired from Glasgow with herhusband Robbie (and dog Timo). Our thanks to Blair Halliday who tookservice in Rathdrum when the rector was in residence in ChristChurch. Blair’s address was much appreciated. All who came received much from the deep humanity ofSeamas Heaney, through his reading of his poetry, from his memories ofhis time living at Glanmore near the church, and through his evident andreal humility. The music by Eamon Sweeney enriched and enhanced theCanon John McCullagh and Seamas Heaney.58 CHuRCH REVIEW
