CIVIC E XCHANGE ANNUAL REPORT 2005-2006Promoting Civic ParticipationGetting Involved in Hong Kong’s Town Planning ProcessCivic Exchange does not only conduct research on democracy-relatedtopics, but also looks at how democracy is being practiced in a society. We are interested in exploring how democratic practices can befurther encouraged in Hong Kong and we generally promote civic participationin societal issues. In early 2006 Civic Exchange worked withprofessional planners in Hong Kong to examine the complex townplanning process in order to produce a user’s guide to show how thepublic can be more effective in their involvement. The user’s guide isavailable at www.civic-exchange.org/publications/2006/TPB-E.pdf. A parallelguide was also produced for Town Planning Board members withthe hope of helping them better understand their duties. We would not have been able to accomplish this diverse array ofinteresting projects in the past year without the assistance of a greatteam, including the researchers, collaborators, editors, translators, designers and the many individuals who contributed their ideasthroughout. I look forward to working with them again and to producingmore intellectually challenging research that will help us findour way forward in the society we live in and care about.19
