The End for High-Pressure Gas Cylinders?High-pressure gas cylinders are acommon sight in many laboratories:a default for supplying analyticalinstruments with their gas requirements,high-pressure gas cylinders are familiarand provide the gas that’s required, so itcould be said that the old adage, ‘if it isn’tbroke, don’t fix it’, could well apply.Despite this, increasing numbers ofanalytical instrument users are choosingto supply their GC FID, LC/MS andother types of instrument with gas viaan analytical gas generator. Driving thisdecision will be a combination of factorsbroadly grouped into four areas; safety, cost, convenience and purity.Safety Concerns…High-pressure gas cylinders can provokesafety concerns in a number of differentways, some with potentially fatalconsequences. The presence of highpressuregas cylinders in the laboratoryhas been likened to sharing the laboratorywith a potential missile. This stems fromthe behaviour of a cylinder that suddenlyde-pressurises. There is enough forcereleased with a European ‘L’ size cylinderto accelerate the cylinder to somethinglike 66mph or 108km/h in around 1/10seconds. Cylinders weigh in at 200lb(98kg), so there’ll be enough momentumto cause some severe damage. It’s because of this potential ‘missilescenario’ that cylinders tend to bestrapped down to something fixed.Even restrained, should a large cylindersuddenly vent its contents into thelaboratory, then there are potentiallyfatal consequences. For example, ifa high-pressure cylinder of nitrogensuddenly vented into the atmosphere ofa laboratory, then more than 9,000 litresof un-breathable gas would be released. This would dramatically reduce theoxygen content of the air – presentingthe possibility of asphyxiation. Therisk of oxygen displacement from theatmosphere is also associated withliquefied gases whose volume willincrease as much as 1,000 fold when inthe gas phase. This means liquid nitrogendewars can also be hazardous. If the gas suddenly venting was apotentially explosive gas, as in the case ofhydrogen, the result could be much moredramatic. Hydrogen will form an explosivemixture at just 4% volume in air. These possibilities are the life threateningsafety concerns associated with highpressuregas cylinders. However, thereis still the potential for other non-fatalinjuries. The practice of rolling cylinderson their bottom edge comes with the riskof trapping toes or feet. With the ‘smaller’cylinders there is also potential for heavylifting injuries when being placed on abench top.Costs Increase Whilst Convenience andPurity are Reduced…With high pressure cylinders the storagerequirements are dictated by safetyconcerns, such as separating hydrogencylinders and cylinders of oxidising gases. These often result in cylinders being somedistance from where the gas is used andhence long gas lines. Whilst the longergas lines result from the positioning ofcylinders for safety concerns, the impactwill be in the areas of cost, convenienceand purity. With any gas line there is the potential forleaks, and the longer the line the greaterthe potential. Hence the requirement toregularly leak-check the gas supply line– this both increases costs and decreasesconvenience - whilst leaks allow gas toescape and also allow impurities to enterthe gas supply, which reduces purity andinfluences the accuracy of any analysis.A Smarter Choice…Analytical gas generators can remove therequirement for high-pressure cylindergases for many analytical instrumentusers. Analytical gas generators aretypically placed next to the instrumentthey’re servicing. This removes any needfor extended gas lines and with themassociated problems impacting on purity, cost and convenience. There are inherent features both in thedesign and the way in which generatorsoperate which offer clear compellingreasons to switch from high-pressuregas cylinders. The latest gas generatorsutilise new technologies includingadsorbents, catalysts, and specialistmicro dryers, to produce ultra high puritygases. Generators are designed to beused at the point of use, simplifying andminimising the amount of pipe work, and guaranteeing ultra high purity gasreaching the instrument. The generators are designed to runcontinuously with minimal annualmaintenance and therefore minimaldisruption to the gas supply. This all buteliminates the introduction of impurities, which can be reduced further by theinstallation of in line purifiers.Increased Safety…High-pressure gas cylinders will containgas which is at a pressure of 200 to 300times atmospheric pressure, and gaswhich is released to atmospheric pressurewould have a volume in the region of9,000 litres. Analytical gas generatorsoperate at a fraction of this pressureand have very low volumes of stored gaswithin them. One of Parker domnickhunter’s market leading hydrogengenerators, for example, will have just50 ml of stored gas, which will be at amaximum of around 5 times atmosphericpressure. Hence the missile concern isremoved with a generator, and there’sno large volume of gas to suddenly ventand make the atmosphere potentiallyexplosive or deficient of life-supportingoxygen. Additional safety features are alsoincorporated in the design; for example,in Parker domnick hunter hydrogengenerators there are leak detection autoshut-off devices.Increased Convenience…High-pressure gas cylinders will requireregular replacement. Gas cylindersrunning out part way through analysiswill result in unplanned downtime, and a replacement cylinder has to becollected and the old one removed whichbrings manual handling and safetyconcerns. After the new cylinder has beenconnected restarting the instrument, and waiting for stable baseline and

(continued)re-calibration, are required beforesamples can be run. Life is moreconvenient with a gas generator as there’sno unplanned downtime. Analytical gasgenerators only require simple quickmaintenance which can be planned for– they don’t unexpectedly run-out of gashalfway through analysis.Increased Purity…Analytical gas generators provide aconstant source of gas. This removes thevariations in purity between cylinders, helping to improve sensitive analyses.Purity is also preserved because there isno chance for impurities to enter the gaspipes, which may happen as cylinders areswitched and regulators changed-over.Reduced Cost…High-pressure gas cylinders can alsoprove to be costly: typical payback periodsfor analytical gas generators are short –sometimes less than one year. The cost ofusing high pressure cylinders is not justthe cost of the gas itself but other charges, some of which can be seen and otherswhich are hidden. Cylinder rental anddelivery charges are readily apparent, however there’s also hidden costs. Thesemust also be included to reveal the truecost.Unlike cylinders, Analytical Gas Systemshave no hidden costs. There are norecurring costs with generators foractivities such as ordering replacementcylinders, there are no storage costs forthe spare and empty cylinders, and thereis no cost of lost productivity through theneed to stop and replace cylinders.Innovative Technology…Parker domnick hunter analytical gasgenerators are world renowned for theirreliability, dependability and long life.Since commercializing their firstlaboratory scale analytical gas generatorin the 1980s, Parker domnick hunter nowserve an installed customer base of over40,000 gas generator users globally.Part of the reason behind this is theunique innovative technology employedin Parker domnick hunter generators, from carbon molecular sieve, to the use ofrobust hydrogen membranes.A Smarter Choice for LC/MS…Providing nitrogen for uses such as LC/MS, Parker domnick hunter’s pressureswing adsorption nitrogen generatorsrepresent state-of-the-art technology. The carbon molecular bed simply andefficiently separates compressed air intonitrogen. The carbon molecular bedachieves this due to its selectiveadsorption capabilities for different gases– oxygen and other unwanted constituentsof the compressed air are simply removedby desorption – the complete process ismonitored by a sophisticated controlsystem. These generators, when connected to anexisting compressed air supply, willprovide a constant supply of nitrogen withlimited moving parts inside the generator. This means that the generator is very quietwhilst operating and there are minimalreplacement parts.A Smarter Choice for GC…Hydrogen offers advantages for GC userswhen used as a carrier gas. The VanDeemter curves illustrate the wide rangeover which high efficiency is obtained, making hydrogen the best carrier gas forsamples containing compounds whichelute over a wide temperature range. Therisks associated with high-pressure gascylinders have already been outlined –hence a gas generator is the smarterchoice for hydrogen. The optimiseddesign of Parker domnick hunterhydrogen generators take deionised waterand, through electrolysis, separate thehydrogen. This is then purified usingdesiccants, and specialist micro dryers. An End For Cylinders? With the improvements that gasgenerators offer in the areas of safety, purity, convenience and cost there’s littlereason to use high-pressure gas cylinderswith instruments such as GC and LC/ MS.The range of Parker domnick hunteranalytical gas generators also extends itstechnologically innovative approach toother techniques such as FT-IR, TOC, ICP,ELSD and Atomic Absorption.

ENGINEERING YOUR SUCCESS.The Analysis of 16 EPA PAHs by GC/MS usingHydrogen Carrier Gas.Mark Wilkinson (mark.wilkinson@parker.com), James Heseltine (james.heseltine@parker.com)Parker Hannifin LtdAIMThe aim of this technical paper is to optimizeand produce a robust and repeatable method forthe analysis of 16 EPA PAHs by GC/MS usinggenerated hydrogen carrier gas, over helium. Thisyields vastly improved analytical performance withshortened run times, whilst eliminating laboratoryhazards associated with high pressure vesselusage, storage and handling.IntroductionHydrogen is the choice of carrier gas for many applications, due to fasteranalysis times (compared with nitrogen and helium) with no reduction inresolution. In fact resolution is normally improved. However hydrogen’suse as a GC/MS carrier gas has long been avoided. Reactions in the ionsource, lack of pumping ability, and high background noise have all beencited as reasons not to use hydrogen as a carrier gas. Modern technologyhas to some extent allayed these concerns, but still helium continuesto be used for many established methods. Generated hydrogen offersan analytically superior, cost effective and safe solution over and abovecylinder fed helium. One of the most common analytical studies performed in manyenvironmental laboratories is the analysis of Polynuclear AromaticHydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are a group of compounds consisting ofmore than one benzene ring, found in fossil fuels, tar and various oils, aswell as being formed by the incomplete combustion of carbon containingcompounds, such as wood, coal and diesel, to name but a few.The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has designated 16 PAHsas primary pollutants. The detection and quantification of thesecompounds, especially in water and soils, is of paramount importance forhuman health and the environment, due to their toxic and carcinogenicnature.Parker domnick hunter manufacture a range of hydrogen generatorsproviding ultra high purity hydrogen gas without the safety concernsassociated with high pressure cylinders. These generators improveanalytical performance, shorten run times and maximise productivity.Analytical considerationsAnalysis of the 16 EPA PAHs is normally carried out using GC-FID orGC/MS, with varying detection limits depending upon the medium inquestion and the analytical technique employed. GC/MS is favourable asit can eliminate non-required peaks, leaving only analytical informationof interest, utilizing Single Ion Monitoring (SIM) mode. This is especiallyimportant in complex matrices, where peaks of similar composition maylead to false interpretation. In any modern analytical laboratory, sample throughput and productivityare of utmost importance, where time is money.Employing hydrogen as a carrier gas is very common in GC-FIDworkflows, yielding superior chromatography, as well as reduced runtimes. Whilst it’s use within GC/MS workflows is less common, with thecorrect conditions, it has the potential to deliver superior performancebenefits over and above helium, with the added incentive of enhancedsafety and cost savings.Typical GC/MS analyses use helium which, as well as having vagaries insupply, often at elevated cost, also necessitates the use of cumbersome, heavy, high pressure cylinders (up to 200 bar g) which must be changedon a regular basis.A Parker domnick hunter hydrogen generator produces ultra high puritycarrier gas at a constant pressure and flow rate, with minimal storedvolume, eliminating laboratory hazards associated with high pressurestorage vessels, such as cylinders.ExperimentalNaphthaleneAnalysis was performed on a Shimdazu QP2010s using SIM mode andsplitless injection (www.shimadzu.com)Hydrogen was supplied from a Parker domnick hunter 110H-MD generator(www.domnickhunter.com)Column supplied by Phenomenex - Zebron ZB5MS 0.25mm X 0.25µm(www.phenomemex.com)Injector - 300°CInterface - 320°CIon Source - 250°CFlow rate - 3ml/min (H2)Injection volume - 1µlOven Programme:-40°C (hold 1minute)100 °C @ 15 °C/min (hold 10 minutes)225 °C @ 5 °C /min (hold 0 minutes)320 °C @ 15 °C /minute (hold 2 minutes)Total run time = 48.33 minutesSampling time - 1minuteControl mode - Linear velocity
