Strollingaround Times Square from myroom at the Astor I heard jazzemanating from a club called theMetropole. I walked in and satdown at the bar. Standing on thecounter was Jimmy McParland, blowing his cornet; Bud Freemantenor sax; and Indian trombonist,Big Chief Walker, along withGeorge Wetling on drums, providingthe rhythm section. After acouple of intermissions, I askedJimmy where I might hear somemore jazz. He told me that his wifewas playing just aroundthe corner at the HickoryHouse, so I headed thereand found another seat at abar to hear MarianMcPartland’s swinging jazztrio, the venue where she, bassist Bill Crow anddrummer Joe Morello heldsway for almost 10 years.Along with a beer or two, Ivisited with the fellow nextto me. He asked what I wasdoing in the morning andsaid that Jack Paar wasopening his new CBSMorning Show and theshow needed an audience.I followed his directionsthe next morning to an old abandonedManhattan theater, andwith five other bodies in theaudience, watched a comedianwhose act was that he couldn’tstop laughing, and listened to EdieAdams and Betty Clooney sing.(Of course, this was before Paar’sNBC Tonight Show.) Afterwards, Itried to shake hands with Jack, buthe begged off, saying he had a badcold. I later learned of his aversionto germs.By the way, the fellow sitting nextto me at the Hickory House wasJose Melis, Paar’s longtime Cubanpianist.Bill SmithPalm DesertJazz TriviaBy O.
