New JerseyJazzSocietyThe Editor’s PickBy Tony Mottola Jersey Jazz EditorThe Angels in the Choir“We always say that when the folks at Englewood Hospitaltake their shirts off at night, they have wings…”— Wendy Oxenhorn, Executive DirectorThe Jazz Foundation of AmericaThe recent tragic death of bassist Dennis Irwin at age 56 focused much attention on the lack of adequatehealth insurance coverage for many in the jazz community, including a report on the issue in The NewYork Times. Now a fund has been established in Mr. Irwin’s memory to provide free cancer screenings toveteran jazz and blues musicians who are uninsured. The Dennis Irwin Memorial Fund, established byEnglewood Hospital and Medical Center and the Jazz Foundation of America, will be funded in part by anannual benefit concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The Jazz Foundation and the New Jersey Medical Center have worked closely together since 1994, soonafter the Dizzy Gillespie Cancer Institute and Memorial Fund was established at the hospital. More than1000 musicians have received medical treatment without charge through the partnership, including manysurgeries performed by a network of pro bono specialists. In addition to medical care, the JFA provides anumber of support services to musicians in need, including assistance with food, housing, utility paymentsand in-home visits. The foundation averaged 500 emergency cases a year — that is until Hurricane Katrinadevastated New Orleans and they handled more than 2,500 cases in just 16 months. The JFA will hold its annual Great Night in Harlem concert at the Apollo Theater on May 29 and among thehonorees will be Dr. Frank Forte, Director of the Dizzy Gillespie Institute. (Dr. Forte, a jazz guitarist, is also anNJJS member and occasional contributor to Jersey Jazz.) The event is co-hosted by Bill Cosby and DannyGlover and the bill features Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath, Phil Woods, Neenah Freelon, Frank Wess, and CecilBridgewater along with 60 legendary jazz and blues artists. It’s an important cause and last year’s gala raised $1.5 million for theFoundation’s good works. If you have deep pockets a $1,500 ticket will alsoget you into the Gala Dinner beforehand and the VIP After Party. But $50 willget you into the bleachers for a great show (last year’s concert CD wasnominated for a Grammy), and a donation of any amount to this worthycause is sure to be put to good use.For more information, call 212-245-3999 or visit www.jazzfoundation.org.Comments?Jersey Jazz welcomes your comments on any article or editorial.
