They have adirect interest in the safety of the community. MediaTo eliminate impaired driving, we must augmentour enforcement efforts with education. In order toreach every driver with our message on the dangersand consequences of impaired driving, we must useas many resources as possible. One of the mostvaluable resources we have available to us is themedia. Television, radio, and print media reach farmore people than we can ever hope to reachthrough safety talks and presentations. This canhave a tremendous impact on our citizens andencourage them to be responsible.Private Sector CollaborationsStrong vocal support and active participationfrom various segments of the private sector arecritical to achieving significant reductions inimpaired driving and related crashes. We mustactively seek their support and participation.Who are the stakeholders in the private sector?Support should be sought from traditional and nontraditionalpartners, including: Advocacy GroupsAdvocacy groups, including state, regional, andlocal MADD affiliates. Don’t assume that everyadvocate is going to contact law enforcement; theymay be waiting for our invitation. Insurance CarriersIn addition to corporate support, seek assistanceof local agents who aggressively support highwaysafety issues within their coverage areas. Considerasking this group to assist with public information andeducation materials. AdvertisingSeek both responsible advertising and publicinformation assistance from advertisers who arewilling to promote safe driving. Automotive/Motorcycle DealershipsEncourage dealerships to sponsor safe drivingcampaigns, child safety seat clinics, and antiimpaireddriving messages. Alcohol Beverage IndustryWe must bring them to the table, seek their input,and help find solutions collaboratively, wherepossible. All levels of this industry should be involved,including the distillers, brewers, distributors,proprietors, and servers.RECOMMENDATIONSAn identified highway safety champion must callthe first meeting and serve as a catalyst.
