COMMUNICATIONMany traffic safety partners, including MADDand <strong>NHTSA</strong> regional offices, provide template mediamaterials that can be valuable to law enforcement.INTERNET RESOURCESInternet technology has brought an unprecedentedamount of information to the fingertips.Information that not long ago required a staff toresearch, decipher, and maintain can now be hadby anyone with minimal effort. Access to informationto communicate your missions and programs to yourofficers and the public alike is just a few mouse clicksaway.While Internet searches can provide volumes ofinformation to assist you in your communicationsefforts, key Web sites have been designedspecifically for this purpose. Appendix B of thisdocument includes a list of Internet sites that providevaluable statistics, training, and other materials toassist law enforcement in developing acomprehensive and effective impaired drivingenforcement program.Summing it up… Use communications strategies yearroundto publicize law enforcementpriorities, develop public support, andpublicize enforcement activities. Use clear and concise messagesabout strict impaired driving enforcement. Combine publicity with actual highvisibility enforcement to create asynergistic effect. Increase publicity by seeking earnedmedia coverage before, during, andafter law enforcement operations (toannounce them, increase theirvisibility, and publicize the results). Develop long-term relationships withthe media.21
