10 <strong>LUMS</strong>ContribunalNational Outreach Programme<strong>LUMS</strong> aims to provide equal academic opportunities to people <strong>of</strong> allsocial walks across Pakistan. In order to fully harness the potential <strong>of</strong>the human resources <strong>of</strong> the country, <strong>LUMS</strong> has been trying to providea broader access to its programmes across Pakistan. The National OutreachProgramme (NOP) was launched in 2001, with the objective <strong>of</strong>providing educational opportunities to bright and talented students fromsmaller cities, villages and inner city areas <strong>of</strong> large urban centres, whoare unable to meet the programme’s regular fee requirement. Deservingstudents with exceptional Matric and FA/FSc results (80% and above)apply through the National Outreach Programme for a four year UndergraduateProgramme.Preliminary Evaluation Test (PET) 2011:After putting intensive efforts for the marketing and promotion <strong>of</strong> theNational Outreach Programme, 6000 applications were received fromacross Pakistan which signifies how competitive and competent todaysyouth is. A total <strong>of</strong> 4500 candidates were called for the PreliminaryEvaluation Test (PET), held in 12 Cities <strong>of</strong> Pakistan, after initial screening<strong>of</strong> the NOP applications. Teams were formulated and sent to thesetest centers for smooth execution <strong>of</strong> the NOP PET. The results <strong>of</strong> PreliminaryEvaluation Test were very significant and demonstrated thehardwork <strong>of</strong> the candidates.Coaching Session 2011:After the Preliminary Evaluation Test, 260 students out <strong>of</strong> 4900 wereshortlisted for the Coaching Sessions on the basis <strong>of</strong> their evaluation testand Matric results. The competition was very ambitious and only thevery brilliant managed to reach the merit list and make it to the NOPcoaching sessions. The sessions started on July 10 and continued tillAugust 1, 2010 and were attended by the shortlisted students whowere coached for the <strong>LUMS</strong> admission tests, LCAT (<strong>LUMS</strong> CommonAdmission Test) and School <strong>of</strong> Science & Engineering (SSE) SubjectTest. For LCAT, students were given mathematics and verbal classesand for the SSE Subject Test students were given Additional Mathematics,Physics, Chemistry and Biology classes. The students went throughrigorous training and their performance was gauged through weeklytests and quizzes. The candidates gave their best performance to tryand benefit from this scholarship initiative.Remedial Sessions:Candidates, who went through the aforementioned stringent NOP admissionprocess last year, were inducted into <strong>LUMS</strong> undergraduate programmesthis year. These students were called 10 days before the start<strong>of</strong> routine classes at <strong>LUMS</strong> for remedial sessions, arranged by the NOPdepartment. NOP scholars were taught English and Computing coursesat the sessions. The aim <strong>of</strong> conducting these sessions is to polish thestudents’ communication skills so that they can be at par with regularstream students.Some Significant Statistics:A total <strong>of</strong> 464 students have been inducted so far through the NOP,out <strong>of</strong> which 54 candidates were selected this year who were coachedlast year at the NOP Coaching Sessions. Till now, 81 students havegraduated and are either placed in top multinational companies or havereceived scholarships to study in universities abroad.
