10 LUMSContribunalNational Outreach ProgrammeLUMS aims to provide equal academic opportunities to people of allsocial walks across Pakistan. In order to fully harness the potential ofthe human resources of the country, LUMS has been trying to providea broader access to its programmes across Pakistan. The National OutreachProgramme (NOP) was launched in 2001, with the objective ofproviding educational opportunities to bright and talented students fromsmaller cities, villages and inner city areas of large urban centres, whoare unable to meet the programme’s regular fee requirement. Deservingstudents with exceptional Matric and FA/FSc results (80% and above)apply through the National Outreach Programme for a four year UndergraduateProgramme.Preliminary Evaluation Test (PET) 2011:After putting intensive efforts for the marketing and promotion of theNational Outreach Programme, 6000 applications were received fromacross Pakistan which signifies how competitive and competent todaysyouth is. A total of 4500 candidates were called for the PreliminaryEvaluation Test (PET), held in 12 Cities of Pakistan, after initial screeningof the NOP applications. Teams were formulated and sent to thesetest centers for smooth execution of the NOP PET. The results of PreliminaryEvaluation Test were very significant and demonstrated thehardwork of the candidates.Coaching Session 2011:After the Preliminary Evaluation Test, 260 students out of 4900 wereshortlisted for the Coaching Sessions on the basis of their evaluation testand Matric results. The competition was very ambitious and only thevery brilliant managed to reach the merit list and make it to the NOPcoaching sessions. The sessions started on July 10 and continued tillAugust 1, 2010 and were attended by the shortlisted students whowere coached for the LUMS admission tests, LCAT (LUMS CommonAdmission Test) and School of Science & Engineering (SSE) SubjectTest. For LCAT, students were given mathematics and verbal classesand for the SSE Subject Test students were given Additional Mathematics,Physics, Chemistry and Biology classes. The students went throughrigorous training and their performance was gauged through weeklytests and quizzes. The candidates gave their best performance to tryand benefit from this scholarship initiative.Remedial Sessions:Candidates, who went through the aforementioned stringent NOP admissionprocess last year, were inducted into LUMS undergraduate programmesthis year. These students were called 10 days before the startof routine classes at LUMS for remedial sessions, arranged by the NOPdepartment. NOP scholars were taught English and Computing coursesat the sessions. The aim of conducting these sessions is to polish thestudents’ communication skills so that they can be at par with regularstream students.Some Significant Statistics:A total of 464 students have been inducted so far through the NOP,out of which 54 candidates were selected this year who were coachedlast year at the NOP Coaching Sessions. Till now, 81 students havegraduated and are either placed in top multinational companies or havereceived scholarships to study in universities abroad. LUMSContribunal 11Realizing dreams and ambitionsZainab BashirZainab Bashir, an NOP graduate, has been awarded a scholarship to pursue herMasters studies at the University of Oxford. Zainab is a BSc 2011 graduatewho majored in Social Sciences.Zainab’s education at LUMS was jointly supported by the National Outreach Programmeand Syeda Ghulam Batool Fund. She graduated among the top 20 studentswith a CGPA of 3.74 and received an admission offer from the Universityof Oxford for an MSc in Social Anthropology. While Zainab was considering herfunding options, the Oxford Graduate Admissions and Funding Office offered herthe Noon Educational Foundation-University of Oxford Scholarship to support herstudies. The scholarship covers full university and college fee as well as all livingexpenses for the one-year Masters programme. The total value of the scholarshipis around GBP 30,340.Zainab is the first NOP graduate to get admitted to the University of Oxford andstudy at one of the world’s best social anthropology schools.Q. How did you hear of the National Outreach Programme(NOP)?ans: My brother’s friend was studying at LUMS and hesuggested that if I want to apply to the LUMS BScprogramme, I should do it through the NOP.Q. Why did you decide to join LUMS?ans: During my A-levels at Resource Academia, all myfriends were interested in joining LUMS. It was theirdream. It was through them that I also developed aninterest in applying to LUMS. My brother also encouragedme and motivated me to join LUMS as he feltthat as a LUMS graduate, one’s value in the job marketis very high. And I agree with him.to find a job, so he started teaching calligraphy atvarious schools. To make ends meet, my elder brotheralso started working alongside studying for his Engineeringprogramme at UET. He is now a computer engineer,working at an oil and gas company. My motheris a housewife.Q. How did you prepare for the LUMS admissiontest and the NOP coaching sessions?ans: Actually, I applied to LUMS through the normalstream. I got 80% scholarship initially, but my financialaid letter said that if I wanted further assistanceI could send a request. So I did and was called in foran interview for NOP.Q. Tell us about your family.ans: My father was a semi-government official, who retiredand invested his provident fund in a business venture,which failed and he lost all his money. He has aMasters degree in English Literature but was unableQ. How did you feel when you got the letter sayingthat you have been admitted to LUMS and youwill be joining soon?ans: Honestly speaking, I was not aware of the magnitudeof the opportunity I had been given.
