<strong>LUMS</strong>Contribunal 11Realizing dreams and ambitionsZainab BashirZainab Bashir, an NOP graduate, has been awarded a scholarship to pursue herMasters studies at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Oxford. Zainab is a BSc 2011 graduatewho majored in Social <strong>Sciences</strong>.Zainab’s education at <strong>LUMS</strong> was jointly supported by the National Outreach Programmeand Syeda Ghulam Batool Fund. She graduated among the top 20 studentswith a CGPA <strong>of</strong> 3.74 and received an admission <strong>of</strong>fer from the <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> Oxford for an MSc in Social Anthropology. While Zainab was considering herfunding options, the Oxford Graduate Admissions and Funding Office <strong>of</strong>fered herthe Noon Educational Foundation-<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Oxford Scholarship to support herstudies. The scholarship covers full university and college fee as well as all livingexpenses for the one-year Masters programme. The total value <strong>of</strong> the scholarshipis around GBP 30,340.Zainab is the first NOP graduate to get admitted to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Oxford andstudy at one <strong>of</strong> the world’s best social anthropology schools.Q. How did you hear <strong>of</strong> the National Outreach Programme(NOP)?ans: My brother’s friend was studying at <strong>LUMS</strong> and hesuggested that if I want to apply to the <strong>LUMS</strong> BScprogramme, I should do it through the NOP.Q. Why did you decide to join <strong>LUMS</strong>?ans: During my A-levels at Resource Academia, all myfriends were interested in joining <strong>LUMS</strong>. It was theirdream. It was through them that I also developed aninterest in applying to <strong>LUMS</strong>. My brother also encouragedme and motivated me to join <strong>LUMS</strong> as he feltthat as a <strong>LUMS</strong> graduate, one’s value in the job marketis very high. And I agree with him.to find a job, so he started teaching calligraphy atvarious schools. To make ends meet, my elder brotheralso started working alongside studying for his Engineeringprogramme at UET. He is now a computer engineer,working at an oil and gas company. My motheris a housewife.Q. How did you prepare for the <strong>LUMS</strong> admissiontest and the NOP coaching sessions?ans: Actually, I applied to <strong>LUMS</strong> through the normalstream. I got 80% scholarship initially, but my financialaid letter said that if I wanted further assistanceI could send a request. So I did and was called in foran interview for NOP.Q. Tell us about your family.ans: My father was a semi-government <strong>of</strong>ficial, who retiredand invested his provident fund in a business venture,which failed and he lost all his money. He has aMasters degree in English Literature but was unableQ. How did you feel when you got the letter sayingthat you have been admitted to <strong>LUMS</strong> and youwill be joining soon?ans: Honestly speaking, I was not aware <strong>of</strong> the magnitude<strong>of</strong> the opportunity I had been given.
