National Youth MentoringTraining WorkshopKickstart & Streng<strong>the</strong>n Your Mentoring Program<strong>NRGize</strong> 2013 Topic InformationTopic 1 – Planning and DesignThis comprehensive planning module identifies <strong>the</strong> stepsrequired to design, conduct and implement a tailoredcommunity needs assessment. These results, along withfindings from mentoring research are explored andapplied to <strong>the</strong> program planning process with <strong>the</strong> aim ofdesigning an evidence based youth mentoring program.Delegates also learn how to recruit an advisory group toassist with <strong>the</strong> design, planning and improvement of <strong>the</strong>program and design <strong>the</strong> boundaries of <strong>the</strong> programTopic 2 – Management and governanceDuring this session delegates will examine <strong>the</strong> roles andresponsibilities of a mentoring program managementteam, discover <strong>the</strong> essential components required toassemble a comprehensive policies and proceduresmanual, identify how to assess potential risk factors andcalculate <strong>the</strong> steps required to mitigate <strong>the</strong>se risks.Topic 3 - EvaluationDuring this session delegates learn how to defineconcrete, measurable outcomes for youth in <strong>the</strong>irprogram, examine data-collection strategies, learn how tomeasure <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> relationships between mentorsand youth in <strong>the</strong>ir program and explore <strong>the</strong> uses <strong>the</strong>y canmake of <strong>the</strong>ir outcomes findings.Topic 4 – StaffThis topic will outline staff roles and responsibilitiesrequired to undertake allocated roles and discusselements of a staff management plan.Topic 5 – RecruitmentElements of <strong>the</strong> recruitment process will be identified,including characteristics of an effective mentor, items toinclude in a mentor position description, formulating aplan to attract specific mentors, along with <strong>the</strong> process ofselecting suitable mentees for a youth mentoringprogram.Topic 6 – Screening and selectionDelegates will engage with <strong>the</strong> screening and selectionprocess in order to identify <strong>the</strong> essential components of acomprehensive application process, while examining <strong>the</strong>importance of screening mentors for both suitability andchild protection. Delegate will also learn how todevelopment of a clear policy for managing <strong>the</strong> process ofinforming successful and unsuccessful applicants.Topic 7 – Orientation and trainingThis topic explores components of orientation andtraining in relation to both mentors and mentees.Planning and delivery of training is discussed in order tomeet <strong>the</strong> learning requirements for mentors andmentees, in line with identified youth mentoringbenchmarks.Topic 8 – Making <strong>the</strong> matchDelegates in this session will learn how to developmatching criteria, create a matching process with anemphasis on <strong>the</strong> mentee’s perspective; develop suitablesupport and monitoring strategies that minimise risk andencourage strong mentoring relationships and create anongoing training strategy.Topic 9 – Monitoring and supportDelegates will learn how to identify suitable support andmonitoring strategies that minimise risk and encouragestrong mentoring relationships, recognise <strong>the</strong> importanceof recording progress data about <strong>the</strong> ongoingdevelopment of <strong>the</strong> match, develop strategies fordetermining and providing ongoing training and exploreopportunities for acknowledging and celebrating <strong>the</strong>mentor relationship.Topic 10 – Closing <strong>the</strong> matchThis topic will discuss <strong>the</strong> elements of a formal matchclosure policy and procedure and will provide delegateswith an awareness of a process to assist young people inplanning <strong>the</strong>ir next steps at completion of <strong>the</strong> program.
