te matatiniNEW ZEALAND POST TAKESKAPA HAKA TO THE WORLDNew Zealand Post has released its Kapa Haka 2011 stamp issue.The stamps capture <strong>the</strong> dynamism and tradition of Kapa Haka, andofficially launched at <strong>Te</strong> Matatini in Gisborne.James <strong>Te</strong> <strong>Puni</strong> (Ngäti Porou), Marketing and Commercial Director forStamps, Coins and REAL Aotearoa said: “The purpose of <strong>the</strong> issue isto showcase Kapa Haka as an important aspect of Mäori culture andNew Zealand identity.”“Using stamps as <strong>the</strong> medium, we believe this will be a powerful andinnovative way of carrying messages about Kapa Haka to audiencesaround <strong>the</strong> world.”The stamps are a collaboration between New Zealand Post, <strong>Te</strong>Matatini, past <strong>Te</strong> Matatini competitors, key cultural organisationsand specialist designer, Tai Kerekere from KEdesign.The development and design of this issue addressed concerns andobjections raised following <strong>the</strong> announcement and subsequentwithdrawal of <strong>the</strong> 2006 Kapa Haka stamps.The six stamps in <strong>the</strong> Kapa Haka 2011 range feature photographicstances that illustrate different aspects of Kapa Haka performance.They also reflect <strong>the</strong> five teams that achieved excellence at <strong>Te</strong>Matatini in 2009 – as defined by <strong>Te</strong> Matatini society. The groupschosen ei<strong>the</strong>r achieved a top three overall placing, or were winnersof one of <strong>the</strong> six disciplines.The two $0.60 stamps show Whakaeke and Poi, <strong>the</strong> $1.20 stampfeatures Waiata-ä-ringa and <strong>the</strong> $1.90 stamp portrays Haka.
