BMA Board of ScienceAbout the authorsMark Hanson MA DPhil Cert Ed FRCOG is Director of the Division of Developmental Origins of <strong>Health</strong><strong>and</strong> Disease <strong>and</strong> British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Science at the Universityof Southampton School of Medicine. He is founding Director of the Institute of DevelopmentalSciences at Southampton. His research concerns the ways in which the developmentalenvironment, <strong>and</strong> especially nutrition, affects cardiovascular, metabolic <strong>and</strong> behaviouralcharacteristics of the individual, influencing how well they respond to later challenges <strong>and</strong>the resulting risks of disease. He is much involved in promoting the public underst<strong>and</strong>ing of thisarea of biomedical science.Caroline Fall MBChB, DM, FRCP, FRCPCH is a consultant paediatrician <strong>and</strong> Professor of InternationalPaediatric Epidemiology at the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre, University of Southampton.Her research focuses on the effects of maternal <strong>and</strong> infant nutrition on obesity, diabetes <strong>and</strong>cardiovascular disease in later life.Sian Robinson PhD R Nutr is a Registered <strong>Nutrition</strong>ist <strong>and</strong> a Principal Research Fellow at theMRC Epidemiology Resource Centre at the University of Southampton. She is responsible forthe nutritional components of two large UK cohorts run by the Epidemiology Resource Centre,the Southampton Women’s Survey <strong>and</strong> the Hertfordshire Cohort Study. Her principal researchinterests are in maternal <strong>and</strong> infant nutrition.Janis Baird MB BCh, PhD, FFPH is a Senior Research Fellow <strong>and</strong> Honorary Consultant in Public <strong>Health</strong>at the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre, University of Southampton.
