Ensuring UF<strong>Law</strong>’sFutureJuan Diaz (left) <strong>of</strong> Orange Park, Florida <strong>Law</strong> Review Editor-in-Chief, and Lisa Wolgast <strong>of</strong> Palm Beach Gardens, FLR SeniorGalleys Editor, visit with Alumni Research Scholar and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dennis Calfee (Review Faculty Advisor) about progress on thestudent-initiated ef<strong>for</strong>t to endow the 55-year-old publication to help ensure its future.Review Endowment UniqueThanks to initiative <strong>of</strong> current and <strong>for</strong>merstudents connected with UF<strong>Law</strong>’s55-year-old Florida <strong>Law</strong> Review, an ef<strong>for</strong>t toendow the publication is <strong>of</strong>f to a strong startwith nearly $300,000 in gifts and pledges.Goal <strong>of</strong> organizers is to raise $1 million topermanently fund through annual interest themonies necessary <strong>for</strong> publication, studentscholarships, symposia and FLR relatedevents.“We’ve received tremendous supportfrom alumni who want to replicate the positiveexperiences they had as <strong>Law</strong> Review members,”said Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dennis Calfee, Reviewfaculty advisor. “We are indebted to eachdonor, many <strong>of</strong> whom have faithfully supportedthe publication every year through AnnualFund. Certainly, though, there are a number <strong>of</strong>our 2,000 FLR alums we would like to hearfrom.”Even more impressive to Calfee, however,is the pivotal role being played by currentmembers. “At least 10 students have pledged$1,000 over five years – they’re giving backbe<strong>for</strong>e they’ve even graduated,” he said. “It’sfurther evidence our students are leading theway in changing the culture <strong>of</strong> giving to thelaw school.”“This ef<strong>for</strong>t is very important to the qualityand stature <strong>of</strong> our law school,” said DeanJon Mills, one <strong>of</strong> more than 2,000 <strong>Law</strong> Reviewalumni. “We greatly appreciate the initiativeand support <strong>of</strong> our students and alumni.”Editor-in-Chief Juan M. Diaz, 3L fromOrange Park, agrees. “It’s great to see so many<strong>Law</strong> Review alumni joining with current membersto help us prepare <strong>for</strong> the future.”The pr<strong>of</strong>essional rewards <strong>of</strong> FLR membershipare what lead many to give back. “Theexperience provided career opportunities andopened doors,” said Mark Nouss ’85, whowith his wife Debra is a major contributor tothe endowment. “I am pleased our gift willenable students to benefit in a similar manner.”Donors <strong>of</strong> $1,000 and up are honored ona “Florida <strong>Law</strong> Review Endowment” recognitionwall in the journal’s <strong>of</strong>fices. Calfee saidsuccessful completion <strong>of</strong> the endowment drivewill make FLR one <strong>of</strong> the most unique in thecountry.DUNWODY DISTINGUISHED LECTUREEach Spring, <strong>Law</strong> Review <strong>of</strong>ficials bring to campusone <strong>of</strong> America’s preeminent legal scholars <strong>for</strong>its Dunwody Distinguished Lecture in <strong>Law</strong>series. (The 2003 speaker is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<strong>Law</strong>rence Gostin <strong>of</strong> Georgetown <strong>University</strong>,discussing “When Terrorism ThreatensHealth: How Far are Limitations onPersonal and Economic Liberties Justified?”)The series was established in honor <strong>of</strong> brothersElliot and Atwood Dunwody by the lawfirms <strong>of</strong> Dunwody White and Landon, P.A.;Mershon Sawyer Johnston; Dunwody & Cole;and the U.S. Sugar Corporation.Endowments — unrestricted (providing<strong>for</strong> the greatest needs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Law</strong>) or restricted <strong>for</strong> a particular use —provide perpetual income <strong>for</strong> the lawschool through investment <strong>of</strong> principalfunds. Established with a minimum <strong>of</strong>$20,000, endowments can be throughoutright gifts, pledges paid over a period <strong>of</strong>years, deferred gifts (such as trusts orinsurance expectancies) and through estateplans. Two important types <strong>of</strong> endowmentsestablished by alumni, friends and lawfirms to support the law school’s qualityeducation now and into the future:Endowed Chairs/Pr<strong>of</strong>essorshipsThese aid in recruitment / retention <strong>of</strong> outstandingfaculty by generating income <strong>for</strong>salary supplements and teaching / researchsupport. An essential tool in UF<strong>Law</strong>’s pushto reach the Top 10 in public law schools:• Chairs: minimum $600,000 contribution+ $420,000 State match• Full Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships: $300,000+ $150,000 State match• Term Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships: $100,000+ $50,000 State matchEndowed ScholarshipsThese can be awarded based on need and/ormerit and are vital in helping` studentspursue a quality legal education.
