As part <strong>of</strong> the AEDI Checklists, teachers were asked to record childrens experiences <strong>in</strong> theyear before enter<strong>in</strong>g formal full-time school. Overall 249,273 (94.8 per cent) children arereported to have experienced some form <strong>of</strong> regular non-parental early childhood educationand/or care <strong>in</strong> the year before enter<strong>in</strong>g formal full-time school (such as family day care,preschool or k<strong>in</strong>dergarten, or care by a grandparent). There are 13,575 (5.2 per cent)children reported as hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>in</strong> parental care only.Figure 4.3: Non-parental early childhood education and/or care experiences beforefirst year <strong>of</strong> formal full-time school<strong>in</strong>g^# (<strong>2012</strong>)^ For 27,125 children, the form <strong>of</strong> early education or care before enter<strong>in</strong>g formal full-time school was not known ornot reported by the teacher.# The total across categories exceeds 100 per cent as teachers may have nom<strong>in</strong>ated more than one form <strong>of</strong> nonparentalearly childhood education and/or care type for a child.34
