ForewordWe are very pleased to be working with the Australian Government and state and territorygovernments to implement the Australian Early Development Index this is a very important earlychildhood initiative that provides us with information on how children are doing in the critical yearsbefore they begin formal schooling.The research shows that getting it right in those early years allows children to thrive throughoutschool and into their adult lives, providing benefits for the whole community and the nation.The research also shows how important it is to use accurate and differentiated data to inform bothpolicy and practice if we are to achieve results that really make a difference for children.This is the second national report on the development of Australias children, presenting asnapshot of the core findings from the 2012 AEDI. It builds on the success of the first nationalcollection of AEDI data in 2009, which we were also proud partners in delivering. The two datasets provide us with evidence indicating progress in the development of Australian children.This pool of publicly available data covers almost every community in Australia. The AEDI assistsresearchers, communities, schools, governments, early years services and health professionals tocontribute towards ensuring that every child gets the best possible start in life.The AEDI stimulates crucial conversations about childrens development.
