For many, the onlyeffective treatment option is a blood andmarrow transplant (BMT).BMT has become a successful treatmentbecause it enables physicians to treatthese diseases with aggressive chemotherapyand/or radiation. BMT allowsreplacement of the diseased or damagedbone marrow after treatment.Our BMT program provides patients withinnovative and lifesaving transplanttherapies.Region’s largest BMT programEstablished in 1977, our BMT programpioneered advancements in bone marrow,peripheral blood and cord blood stem celltransplants in the Kansas City area. We’vesuccessfully completed more than 1,400transplants. Ours was the first BMTprogram in the region to receive accreditation by theFoundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, animportant industry measure of quality.Through the National Marrow Donor Program, wehelp find matches for patients who do not have asuitable bone marrow or stem cell donor in thefamily. Patients have access to the widest possiblerange of treatment options, including clinical trials.Patient-centered careOur highly trained specialists perform a variety ofblood and marrow transplant procedures. The typeof transplant each patient receives is determinedby diagnosis, stage of disease, overall health andage. Transplant types include:• Autologous – The patient’s own harvested cellsare placed back into the body after treatment.• Allogeneic – Cells from a donor are transplantedto the patient after treatment.• Matched related and unrelated donor• Mismatched related and unrelated donor• Cord blood• Reduced intensity and nonmyeloablative• Syngeneic – Donor and recipient are identicaltwinsLeading-edge techniques minimize patientadmission to the hospital whenever possible.Convenient outpatient services are provided at ourRichard and Annette Bloch Cancer Care Pavilion inWestwood, Kansas. All BMT patients are treated in asafe and private environment.
