Monday 8 th July54 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS - 10.45AMAuctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203A quieter day on Monday but still excellent demand for all categories on offer.Prime Cattle to 233ppk and £1706 Barren Cows to 173ppk and £1277Prime Cattle – UTM prime topped at 233ppk for the best of another tremendous run of 27 month Limousin x steersfrom Geoff Cleave of Christow, Geoff saw others to 227,226 and 224ppk and a top price realised of £1706. 25 month oldSimmental’s from John Smith of East Budleigh ran to 208ppk and £1232 for heifers and 203ppk and £1275 for steers.Younger Simmental heifers reached 207ppk for Michael Cheriton of Whitestone with Limousin heifers from the samevendor making to 200ppk. Several big OTM cattle on show, with the Coren family of Yeoford heading this section withgrand 43 month Charolais x steers to 184ppk and £1379 and Kennford’s Roy Baker making to £1263 for British Blue xsteers and £1253 for heifers of the same breed.Barren Cows – The better of three grand South Devon’s from MessrsHarvey Brothers of Plymouth won the weekly Briarwood Products awardfor the highest priced Barren Cow realising £1277 and 163ppk, the othertwo rising to £1161 and £1144. Best price per kilo was for NewtonAbbots Chris Gleeson, his superb 670kg pure bred Aberdeen Angus cowtopped 173ppk and £1155. Further quality Angus cows from RichardTucker of Kingsbridge made 169ppk and £1078 with the same vendorreaching 168ppk and £1209 for a 722kg South Devon cow. John Anthonyof Tedburn St Mary’s smart Belgian Blue cow made 156ppk and £1178 andRoger Morrish of Torrington saw his best 692kg Charolais make 155ppkand £1069. Prices were generally back on last week’s flyer, but taking no harmconsidering we are in the second week of July, traditionally a ‘glut’ timefor lambs. £111.80 was top for 54kg Suffolk x lamb from MessrsStockadon Farm of Cheriton Fitzpaine, £109.50 for a 51kg Dorset fromAlan Bickley of Tiverton, £104 for 49kg from RW Brook of Spreyton,£102.50 for both Messrs Stockadon Farm and John Dorricott ofLongdown and £102 for John Goodman of South Brent. Five vendors sold47-51kg lambs at £100 and the best of the 45kgs sold to £99 (220ppk) onbehalf of JC Webber of Burrington. Best 44kg to £97 (220ppk) again fromRW Brook, 43kg to £96.50 (224ppk) for 16 continental x lambs on behalfof Lowerglen Ltd of Ashcombe and a big pen of 22 Texel x 43kgs at£95.50 for MH Harvey of Slapton. 42kgs rose to £94 for Mrs H Pearse ofBickington, £93.50 for Alan Bickley and £93 for two pens from TuckerCrooke Burnell of North Tawton. Best of a large selection of 41kgspeaked at £91.80 (224ppk) again from RW Brook, £91.50 (223ppk) fromK & J Pleace of Clyst Hydon and £91.20 (222ppk) from James Baskervilleof Bow with plenty of pens £88-£91. 40kg topped at £87.80 for AlanWeymouth of Kingsbridge, with too many vendors to mention sellingbetween £87-£87.50. Some tremendous 39kgs saw prices top at £87.50(224ppk) for Ian Tall of Modbury, with Keith Rowell of Crockernwell at£86.20 and Raymond Palmer of Lustleigh at £86. Rams topped the sale at £109for three vendors, being Wayne Gillard of Whitestone, Roger Rottenbury ofCrediton and Paul Vanstone of Bratton Clovelly. Wayne sold another at £105.50 andthree vendors achieved £99 with rams. £99 was also called for the top price ewe,being a Texel from Paul Bowden of Drewsteignton with pure Suffolks from JohnHillson of Yelverton at £97.50, matched by Ian Widdicombe of Totnes with Suffolkx’s and a further pen at £94.50. More Suffolk x’s at £95 for Douglas Horton ofKingsbridge, RJW Hartnell of Honiton and M & A Partridge of Crediton. Best Mulesselling in the mid £70’s and a strong pen of Scotch ewes headed the hill types at£53.50 for Mark Davey of Lewdown.
