y Fred DuBoisGreetings to all of you who have taken time from yourbusy schedules to peruse this Newsletter. There areseveral points of interest and general information I wishto pass on to you who are longtime DBFA members, orrecent members, or you who are anticipating becomingNEW members.First, –since being elected as Vice President-Membershiplast October, I’ve come to realize the incrediblechallenge this job offers, especially to a novice. I reallyappreciate the tremendous work that Mike Benson, theprevious Chairman over the past few years, and also thefaithful dedication and labor of love of Catherine Smith, for the many, years prior to Mike. They have set the barhigh for this Florida Redneck. Second, – I want you all toknow how proud I am to be a part of a Family that cantrace our roots on American soil, back to the 1660’s. Doyou realize that is over a century before the AmericanRevolution and the signing of the Declaration of Independence?Third,–the DBFA has shown great diligencetracking and maintaining the DuBois Heritage throughcenturies of contributions and achievements that havebeen great assets to the American way of life. Somethingwe all can take PRIDE in. Fourth, –the two storyDuBois House (Fort), standing of the west side of HuguenotStreet, in New Paltz, NY. is a living memorial today,301 years after it was built. There is none like her, of whichwe also are proud. Finally, –(as the early pioneers, all cametogether for a barn raising) so I’m sending out a call to eachand everyone, COME help us build a huge Family Associationwhich will make us all proud. If everyone would helpenlist just one more new member for 2007, we could doubleour ranks to nearly 900. Our President and I have covenant asa goal “1000 by 2010” For every new membership after thisnewsletter publication, we will extend a one year membershipto Sept. 30, 2007. To receive a one year individual membership, send $20 to:Mrs. Pamela Bailey1237 Golden Cana Lane.Celebration FL 34747and include as much info about yourself as you wish.by Eric RothAs a result of the Annual Retreat held in early February, HHS changed its name from the Huguenot Historical Society toHistoric Huguenot Street: Where an America story unfolds. We are excited about the name change because we feel thatit focuses on the most attractive feature of HHS: the site with all of its wonderful houses, collections, and properties. AsHHS moves through a transition to meet financial challenges it is important broaden the site’s appeal and we feel that thenew name change is indicative of an identity shift that will broaden our appeal and support. As interim director with a long history and involvement in the library and archives, I know the story of the DuBoisfamily intimately and the story of the Fort and understand that the DBFA is anxious to move ahead with new interpretiveprojects. However, I feel that I must urge a little more patience until a new permanent director has been chosen. The former director and I both welcomed the expanded use of the Fort’s rooms as a space for the public to interact andengage with the story of the family and the building. Although a five year plan to move toward a more interactive presentationin the rooms has been outlined, I regret to say we cannot this year move toward that goal with a furnishings plan, although I am happy to point out that the second-floor exhibit on family history is being very well received by our visitors.Folks shopping and waiting for tours climb the stairs to see what is there and return interested to know more. HHS thanksthe family for its continued interest and support for maintaining and preserving the building and the genealogy of DuBoisfamily.Historic Huguenot Street needs your ideas and financial support now more than ever. Please let me know any way youwould like to help.Sincerely,Eric J.
