3.5 Establishing a Command/Operations CenterThe Operations Center is established to continually monitor any incoming in<strong>for</strong>mationregarding <strong>the</strong> response, ei<strong>the</strong>r by phone, fax or email, and to communicate withCoordinators as well as federal and local authorities and involved organizations. Thismay be a research center, university <strong>of</strong>fice, local or federal government <strong>of</strong>fice (i.e.,National Marine Sanctuary, National Park Service), or similar location, to be determinedby <strong>the</strong> Incident Commander. Promotion and public awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> response may alsobe run from this <strong>of</strong>fice, or that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> designated Public Affairs Official. This locationalso serves to coordinate <strong>the</strong> response, check in and deploy team members, ga<strong>the</strong>r andarchive data, and keep track <strong>of</strong> samples and <strong>the</strong>ir shipment/receipt.Boat SituationLand Situation24
