Voluntary Repatriation, Naturalisation and ThirdCountry Resettlement.NaturalisationSince 2003, the unit has facilitated the naturalisation ofAfghan refugees, mainly of Indian origin, who haveshown interest in acquiring Indian citizenship and whofulfill the criteria under the relevant law. The grant ofIndian citizenship allows applicants to settle permanentlyin India and thus bring an end to their refugee status.Protection InterventionIn cases where refugees face problems within thecommunity or with the police, we provide assistancethrough regular interactions with the local and refugeecommunity and the local police.In certain cases such as in Mizoram fact findingsinquiries have been conducted into the status anddifficulties faced by the Myanmarese. The resultingreport helped highlight the plight of this group.Legal Aid and LitigationIn addition to the work of the RRI in New Delhi,members of the network throughout the country providefree legal aid to refugees and asylum seekers, and havebeen instrumental in stopping deportation.
