y people from the sector.Lecture ToursJustice Yacoob ( January to June 2002): Taking theopportunity offered by Justice Yacoob's sabbatical fromthe Constitutional Court of South Africa, we invitedhim to give a lecture tour on New Approaches toJusticiability - Constitutional <strong>Law</strong>, <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> andAffirmative Action. He spoke in many Indian cities,lecturing and leading discussions on a variety of issuesconcerning the struggle to achieve social equality andjustice. At each stop Justice Yacoob and Anu Yacoobmet with members of the Bar Council, members of thejudiciary, activist groups, students and teachers of lawcolleges, trade unions, women's groups, dalit groups, anddisability groups as well as a wide variety of citizengroups and media persons. They also met with theJudges of the Supreme Court of India, young judges atseveral judicial academies, IAS officers in training andlaw students all over the country.This lecture tour was significant in that, it offered anopportunity for members of the judiciary,academicians, activists, law students and others to learnmore about the drafting and working of one of themost progressive legal documents in recent times - theConstitution of South Africa. It also demonstrated theremarkable manner in which members of the judiciaryhave come to the aid of marginalised communities andused the legal system to assure civil and political rights,while simultaneously enabling through its judgementsthe progressive realisation of economic, social andcultural rights.Jeffery T. Rosen (November - December 2004) - The<strong>Network</strong> invited Jeff Rosen, General Counsel/Directorof Policy, National Council on Disability (NCD), USAto conduct a speaking tour covering cities likeBhubaneswar, Goa, Delhi, Bangalore and Bombay. Mr.Rosen acts as the chief counsel of the NCD in all aspectsof its operations and manages its policy component.Ms. Barbara Bryant (October 2006): A lecture tour wasorganised where Ms. Barbara Bryant, a lawyer, authorand professor of law from the United States shared herexperiences on working on sexual harassment,employment and discrimination law. Ms. Bryant startedher tour in Mumbai with a two-day conference onSexual Harassment at the Workplace followed bymeetings in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochiand New Delhi.Visit of the delegation from the Irish Centre for<strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> (April 2006)<strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Network</strong> hosted a Public LectureSeries, "<strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> in the International Context" incollaboration with a visiting delegation of facultymembers from the Irish Centre for <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong>,National University of Ireland GalwayVarious programmes were organised in Delhi, Kolkata,Ahmedabad and Mumbai including panel discussions,debates, and public/press meetings, with judges, lawyers,NGO activists, university faculties and students. Some ofthe universities visited were, the Gujarat National <strong>Law</strong>University, (GNLU), SNDT University and St. Xavier'sCollege was followed by a public/press meeting.66
