David M. Jacobowitz, B.S., M.S., Ph.D.: majored in biologyand chemistry. After graduating from CCNY, he entered the Army andwas stationed in Korea and Japan in the Medical Corp. In 1955, heworked as an assistant in Brooklyn <strong>College</strong> of Pharmacy in the Departmentof Pharmacology student laboratory. In 1957, he married IleneHammer and they began their life together, which has been ongoingfor 55 years. He received a Master’s degree in 1958 in the Departmentof Anatomy at Ohio State University (OSU), <strong>College</strong> of Medicine anda Ph.D. in the Department of Pharmacology in 1962. He then receiveda Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania MedicalSchool Department of Pharmacology.In 1970, David was promoted to Associate Professor. In 1971, he receiveda position at the National Institute of Health (NIH) as a Section Chief in the Laboratory of ClinicalScience. He and Ilene and their two sons arrived in Bethesda Maryland, where they have lived for42 years. His work has focused on brain neurochemicals and mapping of neural systems of the brain.As a major repository of information concerning sites of localization for potent brain neurochemicals,the lab has given birth to a field of neuroscience that he describes as “brain cartography”. His guidingprinciple is that knowledge of the building blocks, or “nuts and bolts”, give us clues about how thenervous systems operate and how they might fail in disease and injury. He has published over 450 scientificarticles and has produced the state-of-art color atlas entitled, “Chemoarchitectonic Atlas of theDeveloping Mouse Brain”.He retired from NIH in 2008 and is now an Adjunct Professor at the Uniformed Services Universityof the Health Sciences (USUHS). It is located on the Campus of the Walter Reed National MilitaryMedical Center in Bethesda Maryland. David continues to do research in the Department of Anatomy,Physiology and Genetics. He has managed to find time to be a wood turner since 1969.***Samuel N.
