I was employed as an engineer at the Port of New York Authority, where I designed an extensionto a major runway at Newark Airport to accommodate jet aircraft, and later, a structural engineerwith the Rocketdyne Corp., CA, where I was cited for my analysis of engine components on therocket used in the Mercury program. I was a NASA Fellow at the Jet Propulsion Lab, and again atthe NASA-Ames Research Center, where my work on the “finite volume method” for solving theequations of shock wave flow was widely recognized. I was an industrial consultant for manyyears, working in turbulent jet flow for the Grumman Aerospace Corp. and developing custom scientificsoftware for the Union Carbide Corporation. I authored, or co-authored many important papersin the areas of viscous shock waves and computational fluid dynamics with R. MacCormack, turbulent jet flow with A. Rubell, and fractals in metal fracture with B. Mandelbrot. I was, for manyyears, a member of the engineering faculty of the City College of New York, and the mathematicsfaculty of Bronx CC/CUNY, where I introduced the pre-computer science option.
