To kick off the annualFall Gathering, Yosemite Associationdonors gathered in the aptly named SunRoom to enjoy hors d ' oeuvres and winegenerously provided by Redwood Creek.Members mingled with one another andYosemite Superintendent Mike Tollefson,the Association CEO David Guy andour special guests David Stark Wilson,photographer of Above All, who signedcopies of his book, and Stephen Botti,author of An Illustrated Flora of YosemiteNational Park . We hope to meet you there.King of the CanistersCC Merced intern Chris Hubach on;:s bear canister throne this summerl t'aivona.z02Every group of backpackers headed foran overnight stay in the Yosemite wildernesscarries a bear canister to keep theirgranola and other rations safe from animals. The canister rental program is oneof many park services supported by YAfunds and interns.Park visitors made particularly gooduse of the program this past Fourth ofJuly weekend. Afterward, wildernessranger Joan McCandless had 34 canistersto clean out at Wawona alone . As theFourth was the last three day weekendof the season, McCandless told her twoYA/NPS wilderness interns they wereunlikely to beat her record . But she failedto factor in their determination . In thefollowing weeks, intern Chris Hubachsaved incoming canisters until he had52 to clean in a single day—likely settinga park record . Says McCandless, " WhileI thought they might be motivated by alittle healthy competition, I now feel likethe Tom Sawyer of Wawona and Chrisfeels like the king ."Hats off to our Event DonorsThroughout the year, we at the YosemiteAssociation treat our members to avariety of events .
