Every day, thousands ofvisitors gaze in wonder at the grandeurof the granite domes and waterfalls.Inevitably, each of them is overwhelmedwith questions at one time or another.Fortunately, the Yosemite Association ' sVisitor Information Volunteers are thereto provide some answers and a friendlysmile as these questions come to light.This year, 91 volunteers staffed interpretivefacilitiesand introducedpark visitors tothe Association ' sefforts to supporteducation andstewardship inthe park . Theseindispensablevisitor advisorsalso spent amonth (or twoor five!) livingand working inthe park. She lefther Bay Area condo for the wilds ofMariposa County and a position in ouroffices in El Portal. Over the next sevenand a half years, Laurel wore manyhats at the Yosemite Association . AsMembership and Development Directorshe mailed countless letters, planned andattended hundreds of events, labeledeach light switch with care and grewthe Association from 8,500 membersto an assemblage of nearly 11,000,many of whom she knew personally.This September, Laurel left Yosemite tobecome Executive Director of the MesaVerde Museum Association for MesaVerde National Park, Colorado. Laurel,we ' ll miss your wit, creativity and ofcourse your feathered purple cap in thepark . Congratulations on your next bigadventure!As a former YA board member, Malcolmhas served as an advisor on manyAssociation publications and has beeninstrumental in establishing YA 's newpartnership with Heyday Books . He isa revered colleague and friend to manypeople in the worlds of books, publishing,nature conservation, CaliforniaIndian communities and academia . Forhis staff at Heyday, and certainly for all ofus, he is a delight and daily inspiration .Previous recipients of the award haveincluded Alice Waters, Eva Paterson,Ruth Asawa and Belva Davis . Fellowrecipients this year are Van Jones, cofounderof the Ella Baker Center forHuman Rights ; writer, educator andorganizer Elizabeth Martinez ; and theAsian Women ' s Shelter.
