Prentiss special representativeof the American Near EastRelief, who sent by headquartersto make a survey of the work in theOrient and who has just reached Parisfrom Constantinople after going throughthe Smyrna fire. He is returning tothe United States to report on the futurepossibilities of refugee work.Mr. Prentiss had a conference withthe American Ambassador in Rome,Richard Washburn Child, and will seeAmbassador Herrick here and AmbassadorHarvey at London, and finallywill report to the State Department inWashington.“The Allies,” said Mr. Prentiss,“ought to get out of Constantinopleimmediately, to avert disaster; otherwisethey will be forced out, for theyface a careful Turkish plan.”He declared that there was certain tobe an explosion in Constantinople soon,which, in his opinion, “would be anotherSmyrna, but several times worse.”Three-quarters of a million people mustbe evacuated from Constantinople pellmellif the impending disaster is notanticipated.The Turks, Mr. Prentiss said, had alist of 8,000 Greeks and Armenians inConstantinople, with their photographs,1


and “they are going to get them andkill them.” Nureddin Pasha, second incommand of the Nationalist Army, toldhim that Turkey was through with allmissionaries, including Americans, and itwas going to be “Turkey for theTurks.”If the Americans wanted to help Turkey,Nureddin advised, they could sendtechnical men, but no more missionschools.The Turks during their first retreataccording to Mr. Prentiss, dropped offsecret agents, and these agents tookphotographs of Greeks, particularly officers,and investigated all outrages. Theyattached memoranda to the pictures, andthe Turks when they made their recentadvance gathered the compiled recordsof more than 25,000 persons chargedwith crimes. They found <strong>12</strong>,000 of thesein Smyrna, Mr. Prentiss says, and killedthem, and are waiting to get 8,000 whomthey have “spotted” in Constantinople.###Typed word for word.
