The new edition of the LuK brand’s spareparts 

catalogue for clutches is more than 600 

pages long. The catalogue from Schaeff ler 

Automotive Aft ermarket was created espe- 

cially for passenger cars and light commer- 

cial vehicles, and contains over 2,700 

diff erent articles for repairing the clutches 

of vehicles from more than 60 manufacturers.

systems being used in the world today. Since it was introduced in 2008, the number 

of carmakers and satisfi ed customers using this innovative technology has grown

Vehicles that deliver driving fun and comfort with 

lower fuel consumption are very popular with end 

customers these days. The LuK dry double clutch 

represents a major step forward in energy effi ciency 

and a decrease in fuel consumption and emissions 

associated with it. The double-clutch gearbox using 

a dry double clutch was fi rst introduced with much 

fanfare in 2008 in Europe, and it soon became a 

market success.

diesel engines from the Volkswagen Group, to which the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI CR engines of the Audi,

In a few days, the world’s most important trade 

fair for the Aft ermarket industry begins in Frankfurt 

am Main, Germany. At the Automechanika 

2012 Schaeff ler Automotive Aft ermarket will exhibit 

under its “more” concept from 11-16 September. 

What can visitors expect? In the Forum of the trade fair 

facility visitors will fi nd a world of products from the LuK, 

INA and FAG brands for passenger cars, commercial vehic-

“Its international character 

makes it unique!” 

Mr. Mußhoff , this year’s Automechanika Frankfurt is 

just around the corner. This is the fi rst Automechanika 

Frankfurt under your leadership. What do you feel 

most – anticipation or excitement? 

Together with the team, I’ve worked hard on how we 

can further develop the Automechanika topic-wise. 

Now I want to see what visitors think of these new 

accents. So in this respect, of course I feel excited, but 

my anticipation at experiencing the whole show in this 

role is huge. 

A trade fair of this size requires effi cient planning and 

has a long period of preparation. When did you and 

your team begin preparations? And how long have you 

been in the fi nal stages? 

Few people believe this, but an Automechanika in 

Frankfurt requires two years of preparation. About 

4,500 exhibitors need to be consulted correctly, and 

we want to off er our visitors an interesting program 

during the show that cannot be found at any other 

trade fair. That’s why we regularly conduct exhibitor 

and visitor surveys to learn what’s on our customers’ 

minds. 

Time for some facts and fi gures – how many exhibitors 

are you expecting in Frankfurt? And more importantly, 

what highlights can visitors expect this year? 

The trade fair grounds will be full, which means an area 

of about 300,000 m². We are expecting about 4,500 

exhibitors, ca. three-quarters of them will be from 

Germany and Europe. Highlights this year will fall 

under our main topics of Education and Training, Truck 

Competence, and two special shows about E-mobility. 

A trade fair is always a good measure of the mood of 

an entire industry. What’s your impression? Are the 

euro crisis and worries about the economy fi nally 

having an eff ect on the Automotive Aft ermarket? 

Our industry is still doing very well, at least according 

to the many associations we worked closely with 

during our preparations for the show. The same 

applies here as it did during the crisis in 2008/2009 – 

in tough economic times, companies tend to focus on 

the most important industry events. The number of 

exhibitors from those countries aff ected by the euro 

crisis is holding steady, but we anticipate fewer visitors 

from these countries at the show.


Besides this, have you identifi ed other trends at the 

Automechanika 2012? 

Generally we can say that demand for parts and 

systems remains high. Exhibitors for these segments 

are located in the eastern areas of the trade-fair 

grounds. Schaeff ler has a new stand here in the Forum 

with Continental. We expanded the western parts of 

the trade-fair grounds for repair and maintenance 

exhibitors. Bosch is exhibiting for the fi rst time in 

Hall 9 with all of its brands under one roof; together 

with BMW, Continental, ZDK and many more. We are 

also opening Hall 9.2. 

From Frankfurt to the world. Since it was founded 

in 1971, the Automechanika has expanded dramatically. 

Today there’s an Automechanika trade fair in 11 

other cities around the world in addition to here in 

Frankfurt. What eff ect has this internationalization 

had on the Frankfurt location of the trade fair? 

Contrary to those critics who believed we would cannibalize 

ourselves with this international strategy, the 

number of visitors coming to the Frankfurt show from 

those countries where we hold a new Automechanika 

is growing. The shows in foreign countries give 

companies the chance to enter markets and regions 

where they want to generate new business. In a foreign 

country, they meet groups of visitors from that country. 

Frankfurt is all about third-country business. Its international 

character makes it unique, and it will remain 

this way over the long-term. 

Next year an Automechanika will be held in the 

booming emerging market of India. Besides this 

show, are you planning to expand further in the 

near future? 

We will continue to keep an eye on international 

markets in the future, and wherever it makes sense 

we’ll hold new events. But here as well we listen 

closely to our exhibitors. Their opinions count. 

About Olaf Mußhoff 

On 1 October 2010, Olaf Mußhoff assumed management directorship of 

the Automechanika Frankfurt and responsibility for the operative management 

of this leading international trade fair of the automotive industry. 

Mr. Mußhoff is an experienced trade fair expert and has worked many 

years for the Messe Frankfurt. He led the Exhibitor Services department, 

for instance, and Project Controlling, among other jobs. Prior to this, he 

was Project Controller and then Business Project Director at Deutsche 

Bahn Real Estate mbH. 

Mr. Mußhoff holds a Master’s Degree in international business from the 

Vienna University for Economics and Business. He was born in Dortmund, 

Germany, is married and the father of two children.

Brand Repairer or independent Garage? 

When the company car goes up the platform lift 

Brand repairers have the largest market share of the company-car inspection and repair business in 

Germany. For customer satisfaction and price-for-value, independent garages clearly lead the way. 

This was the conclusion of a study conducted by the German market research company TEMA-Q. 

Garage Loyalty 

Surveyed were companies who use only a brand repairer (n = 702) and those who use only an independent 

garage (n = 360). 

About three-quarters of the companies said they will defi nitely remain loyal to their current brand 

repairer or independent garage. For the remaining quarter of those surveyed, the chance of remaining 

loyal was also very high.

How great is the chance that you will go to the same repairer for your next repair or inspection? 

Their study surveyed about 1,400 compa- 

nies regarding the service quality their 

company vehicles are getting. The market 

researchers were interested in learning, 

not only customer satisfaction levels, but 

what the reasons would be for a company 

to change from a brand repairer to an 

independent garage. 

The current market situation is clear with 

nearly half of the companies surveyed 

relying on a brand repairer for their sche- 

duled inspections and repairs. About a 

quarter said they always look for an independent 

garage to do this work. The rest 

of those surveyed said they alternated 

between the two, if they didn’t carry-out 

the work themselves. 

What reasons would bring a company – 

that prefers an authorized brand repair 

shop – to switch to an independent 

garage? Not surprisingly, the reason most 

oft en mentioned was lower costs (54%). 

However, proximity to an independent 

garage was also mentioned (26%). Added 

to this is the fact that company-car customers 

of independent garages are clearly 

more satisfi ed, and not only because of 

their better price-for-value. Independent 

garages are especially strong when it 

comes to employee expertise and the 

quality of the work delivered. Their image, 

on the other hand, was seen by those 

surveyed as being negative compared 

to the brand repairers. The survey found 

that changes in the current market 

structure are rare, which is due mostly to 

customer loyalty to their current garage – 

whether authorized brand repairer or 

independent.

Janine Nagies from Verden/Bremen – winner of the RepXpert Magazine 01/2012 raff le – 

was on the road at fi ve in the morning with her friend Dennis and his son. An exciting 

weekend of truck racing awaited her behind the scenes with the MKR Technology Truck 

Racing teams at Germany’s Nürburgring. 

For the winner, the special atmosphere at Nürburgring, 

and the impressive number of racing trucks, was just 

impessing. Janine Nagies works in a garage herself so 

this was the perfect combination of entertainment and 

job. She and her two guests didn’t miss their chance at 

looking inside the MKR trucks, where a racing clutch and 

power-steering pump from LuK deliver the power and 

precision needed on the track. In the VIP area, they met 

pilot Markus Oestreich and team owner Mario Kress – and 

got all the posters and autographs they wanted. One of 

the highlights was when Janine Nagies and little Jeremy

Despite heavy showers at times, the three truck-sport 

fans had an unforgettable time at Nürburgring. And it 

was a rousing success for the MKR Technology Truck 

Racing Team, too. On the fi st day, Saturday, Adam Lacko 

won his fi rst race of the season for Mario Kress’s team. 

The next day Markus Oestreich did the same and delivered 

a second victory. MKR was able to increase its lead over 

the other teams in the race for the Team Championship.
