The new edition of the LuK brand’s spareparts<br />

catalogue for clutches is more than 600<br />

pages long. The catalogue from Schaeff ler<br />

Automotive Aft ermarket was created espe-<br />

cially for passenger cars and light commer-<br />

cial vehicles, and contains over 2,700<br />

The LuK Dry Double Clutch<br />

Vehicles that deliver driving fun and comfort with<br />

lower fuel consumption are very popular with end<br />

customers these days. The LuK dry double clutch<br />

represents a major step forward in energy effi ciency<br />

and a decrease in fuel consumption and emissions<br />

associated with it. The double-clutch gearbox using<br />

a dry double clutch was fi rst introduced with much<br />

fanfare in 2008 in Europe, and it soon became a<br />

“Its international character<br />

Mr. Mußhoff , this year’s Automechanika Frankfurt is<br />

just around the corner. This is the fi rst Automechanika<br />

Frankfurt under your leadership. What do you feel<br />

most – anticipation or excitement?<br />

Together with the team, I’ve worked hard on how we<br />

can further develop the Automechanika topic-wise.<br />

Now I want to see what visitors think of these new<br />

accents. So in this respect, of course I feel excited, but<br />

my anticipation at experiencing the whole show in this<br />

role is huge.<br />

A trade fair of this size requires effi cient planning and<br />

has a long period of preparation. When did you and<br />

your team begin preparations? And how long have you<br />

been in the fi nal stages?<br />

Few people believe this, but an Automechanika in<br />

Frankfurt requires two years of preparation. About<br />

4,500 exhibitors need to be consulted correctly, and<br />

we want to off er our visitors an interesting program<br />

during the show that cannot be found at any other<br />

trade fair. That’s why we regularly conduct exhibitor<br />

and visitor surveys to learn what’s on our customers’<br />

minds.<br />

Time for some facts and fi gures – how many exhibitors<br />

are you expecting in Frankfurt? And more importantly,<br />

what highlights can visitors expect this year?<br />

The trade fair grounds will be full, which means an area<br />

of about 300,000 m². We are expecting about 4,500<br />

exhibitors, ca. three-quarters of them will be from<br />

Germany and Europe. Highlights this year will fall<br />

under our main topics of Education and Training, Truck<br />

Competence, and two special shows about E-mobility.<br />

A trade fair is always a good measure of the mood of<br />

an entire industry. What’s your impression? Are the<br />

euro crisis and worries about the economy fi nally<br />

having an eff ect on the Automotive Aft ermarket?<br />

Our industry is still doing very well, at least according<br />

to the many associations we worked closely with<br />

during our preparations for the show. The same<br />

applies here as it did during the crisis in 2008/2009 –<br />

in tough economic times, companies tend to focus on<br />

the most important industry events. The number of<br />

exhibitors from those countries aff ected by the euro<br />

crisis is holding steady, but we anticipate fewer visitors<br />

from these countries at the show.

Besides this, have you identifi ed other trends at the<br />

Automechanika 2012?<br />

Generally we can say that demand for parts and<br />

systems remains high. Exhibitors for these segments<br />

are located in the eastern areas of the trade-fair<br />

grounds. Schaeff ler has a new stand here in the Forum<br />

with Continental. We expanded the western parts of<br />

the trade-fair grounds for repair and maintenance<br />

exhibitors. Bosch is exhibiting for the fi rst time in<br />

Hall 9 with all of its brands under one roof; together<br />

with BMW, Continental, ZDK and many more. We are<br />

also opening Hall 9.2.<br />

From Frankfurt to the world. Since it was founded<br />

in 1971, the Automechanika has expanded dramatically.<br />

Today there’s an Automechanika trade fair in 11<br />

other cities around the world in addition to here in<br />

Frankfurt. What eff ect has this internationalization<br />

had on the Frankfurt location of the trade fair?<br />

Contrary to those critics who believed we would cannibalize<br />

ourselves with this international strategy, the<br />

number of visitors coming to the Frankfurt show from<br />

those countries where we hold a new Automechanika<br />

is growing. The shows in foreign countries give<br />

where they want to generate new business. In a foreign<br />

country, they meet groups of visitors from that country.<br />

Frankfurt is all about third-country business. Its international<br />

character makes it unique, and it will remain<br />

this way over the long-term.<br />

Next year an Automechanika will be held in the<br />

booming emerging market of India. Besides this<br />

show, are you planning to expand further in the<br />

near future?<br />

We will continue to keep an eye on international<br />

markets in the future, and wherever it makes sense<br />

we’ll hold new events. But here as well we listen<br />

closely to our exhibitors. Their opinions count.<br />

About Olaf Mußhoff<br />

On 1 October 2010, Olaf Mußhoff assumed management directorship of<br />

the Automechanika Frankfurt and responsibility for the operative management<br />

of this leading international trade fair of the automotive industry.<br />

Mr. Mußhoff is an experienced trade fair expert and has worked many<br />

years for the Messe Frankfurt. He led the Exhibitor Services department,<br />

for instance, and Project Controlling, among other jobs. Prior to this, he<br />

was Project Controller and then Business Project Director at Deutsche<br />

Bahn Real Estate mbH.<br />

Mr. Mußhoff holds a Master’s Degree in international business from the<br />

Vienna University for Economics and Business. He was born in Dortmund,<br />

Germany, is married and the father of two children.<br />

Brand Repairer or independent Garage?<br />

When the company car goes up the platform lift<br />

Brand repairers have the largest market share of the company-car inspection and repair business in<br />

Germany. For customer satisfaction and price-for-value, independent garages clearly lead the way.<br />

This was the conclusion of a study conducted by the German market research company TEMA-Q.<br />

Garage Loyalty<br />

Surveyed were companies who use only a brand repairer (n = 702) and those who use only an independent<br />

garage (n = 360).<br />

About three-quarters of the companies said they will defi nitely remain loyal to their current brand<br />

repairer or independent garage. For the remaining quarter of those surveyed, the chance of remaining<br />

loyal was also very high.<br />

Their study surveyed about 1,400 compa-<br />

nies regarding the service quality their<br />

company vehicles are getting. The market<br />

researchers were interested in learning,<br />

not only customer satisfaction levels, but<br />

what the reasons would be for a company<br />

to change from a brand repairer to an<br />

independent garage.<br />

The current market situation is clear with<br />

nearly half of the companies surveyed<br />

relying on a brand repairer for their sche-<br />

duled inspections and repairs. About a<br />

quarter said they always look for an independent<br />

garage to do this work. The rest<br />

of those surveyed said they alternated<br />

between the two, if they didn’t carry-out<br />

the work themselves.<br />

What reasons would bring a company –<br />

that prefers an authorized brand repair<br />

shop – to switch to an independent<br />

garage? Not surprisingly, the reason most<br />

oft en mentioned was lower costs (54%).<br />

However, proximity to an independent<br />

garage was also mentioned (26%). Added<br />

to this is the fact that company-car customers<br />

of independent garages are clearly<br />

more satisfi ed, and not only because of<br />

their better price-for-value. Independent<br />

garages are especially strong when it<br />

comes to employee expertise and the<br />

quality of the work delivered. Their image,<br />

on the other hand, was seen by those<br />

surveyed as being negative compared<br />

to the brand repairers. The survey found<br />

that changes in the current market<br />

structure are rare, which is due mostly to<br />

customer loyalty to their current garage –<br />

whether authorized brand repairer or<br />

independent.

Weekend of Racing<br />

at “the Green Hell”<br />

The winners of the RepXpert raff le at the Nürburgring<br />

Janine Nagies from Verden/Bremen – winner of the RepXpert Magazine 01/2012 raff le –<br />

was on the road at fi ve in the morning with her friend Dennis and his son. An exciting<br />

weekend of truck racing awaited her behind the scenes with the MKR Technology Truck<br />

Racing teams at Germany’s Nürburgring.<br />

For the winner, the special atmosphere at Nürburgring,<br />

and the impressive number of racing trucks, was just<br />

impessing. Janine Nagies works in a garage herself so<br />

this was the perfect combination of entertainment and<br />

job. She and her two guests didn’t miss their chance at<br />

looking inside the MKR trucks, where a racing clutch and<br />

power-steering pump from LuK deliver the power and<br />

precision needed on the track. In the VIP area, they met<br />

pilot Markus Oestreich and team owner Mario Kress – and<br />

got all the posters and autographs they wanted. One of<br />

the highlights was when Janine Nagies and little Jeremy<br />

Despite heavy showers at times, the three truck-sport<br />

fans had an unforgettable time at Nürburgring. And it<br />

was a rousing success for the MKR Technology Truck<br />

Racing Team, too. On the fi st day, Saturday, Adam Lacko<br />

won his fi rst race of the season for Mario Kress’s team.<br />

The next day Markus Oestreich did the same and delivered<br />

a second victory. MKR was able to increase its lead over<br />

the other teams in the race for the Team Championship.<br />
