7.1. Literal Equations www.ck12.org7.1 Literal EquationsIn the previous section, we looked at problem solving strategies using formulas. Formulas are examples of LiteralEquations and in this section, we are going to look at Literal Equations in more depth.Officially, a Literal Equation is an equation with several variables (more than one). Some of the more commonLiteral Equations that we see all the time are:TABLE 7.1:A = LW Area = Length * Width Area of a RectangleP = 2L + 2W Perimeter = Twice the Length + Perimiter of a RectangleTwice the WidthA = πr 2 Area = Pi * the Square of the Radius Area of a CircleF = 1.8C + 32Temperature in Fahrenheit = thetemperature in Celsius * 1.8 + 32Conversion from Celsius to FahrenheitD = RT Distance = Rate * Time Distance FormulaA = P + PrtAccrued Value = Principal + Princial* Interest Rate * TimeSimple Interest FormulaSometimes we need to rearrange a formula to solve for a different variable. For example, we may know the Areaand the Length of a rectangle, and we want to find the width. Or we may know the time that weve been travellingand the total distance that weve travelled, and we want to find our average speed (rate). To do this, we need to isolatethe variable of interest on one side of the equal sign, with all the other terms on the opposite side of the equal sign.Luckily, we can use the same techniques that we have been using to solve for the value of a variable.Example 1: Find the Width of a Rectangle given the Area and the LengthSolution: The Area of a rectangle is given by the formula A = lw. We need to solve this equation for w.A = lwAl = lw lAl = wArea = Length * WidthDivide both sides by LengthEquivalent form solved for WidthExample 2: Find the Width of a Rectangle when given the Perimeter and LengthSolution: The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2l + 2w. We need to solve for w.This one is actually a little more complicated. The formula has one term on the left hand side and two terms on theright. It’s important to remember that we have to move one term to the left first.114
