<strong>Golf</strong>ernewsFootballers unitefor Sir BobbyStars tun out in force to support FoundationNorth East football cametogether to raise fundsfor the Sir Bobby RobsonFoundation.Current and former playersand staff from Middlesbrough FC,Sunderland AFC and NewcastleUnited were among the golfersswinging into action at the Sir BobbyRobson Celebrity <strong>Golf</strong> Day at RockliffeHall Hotel, near Darlington.Organised by Sir Bobby’s family,it is the third annual golf day in aid ofthe Sir Bobby Robson Foundation andcharity Patron and Middlesbroughchairman Steve Gibson was amongthe high-profile guests. Otherssupporting the event included Boro’sTony Mowbray, Jason Steele, NickyBailey, Dean Gordon, Jimmy Warnettand Richard Smallwood, formerSunderland players Micky Horswill,Ritchie Pitt and John MacPhail andNewcastle United’s John Carver, SteveStone, Andy Woodman, Bob Moncur,John Beresford, Steve Howey, JamesPerch, Dan Gosling and Shola Ameobi.Tony ‘The Fridge’ Phoenix-Morrison,who ran for 24 hours carrying a fridgeat the weekend to raise funds forthe Foundation, was also among thegolfers. The granddad from HebburnLady Elsie Robsonwith Shola Ameobi,Steve Gibson, TonyMowbray and MickyHorswillwas celebrating his 49th birthday andreceived a special thank you from SirBobby’s son Andrew.Lady Elsie says: “This is alwayssuch a special day for my familyand I because we’re so involvedwith organising things. We meet somany wonderful fundraisers for theFoundation and it feels good to be oneof them at this time of year.“I love the way this golf day unitesthe north east football clubs. Bob wouldhave been very touched by that.“The support our charity receivesfrom Sunderland, Newcastle andMiddlesbrough particularly is wonderfuland we really appreciate it. Especially asI know they’re each coming to the end ofa long football season.”Middlesbrough FC chairman, SteveGibson, says: “It’s fantastic to see allthree North East football clubs so wellrepresented. It’s a busy time of theseason for everyone but people madethe effort to come out and that’s atribute to Sir Bobby and all his charityis trying to achieve.“I’m very proud to be a Patron ofthe Foundation and it’s fantastic thatthe people of the North East have beenso supportive of it. It’s raised over£5million now and that money’s helpingpeople with cancer in this region.”Newcastle United’s Shola Ameobisays: “I’m very happy to support theSir Bobby Robson Foundation andespecially on a lovely day like this.We’re playing a bit of golf but todayis about raising money and hopefullysome awareness of the charity.“Sir Bobby meant the world tome. I wouldn’t be where I am todayif it wasn’t for him, his generosity,his kindness and his leadership. Hewas a mentor to me even after he leftNewcastle.
